Mollie B’s Polka Party drew a huge crowd to Ennis in 2012, and the local polka
community has worked out a repeat appearance and another taping of the show in
Ennis this month.

to town this month

Brace yourselves, polka
fans: Mollie B is coming back
to town.
RFD-TV will film an
episode of “The Mollie B
Polka Party” for the second
consecutive year on Feb. 21-
24 at the Sokol Hall.
Last year’s event brought
polka fans from across the
nation to Ennis for a four-day
polka blowout, with polka
enthusiasts from as far away
as Nebraska and Minnesota
making the trip following
show host Mollie B.
“She’s obviously got an
incredible following,” said
Tourism Director Gina
Rokas. “There’s a lot of inter-
est.”
RFD-TV is broadcast into
40 million homes via
DirecTV, Dish Network and a
number of independent
cable outlets.
Mollie B said at last year’s
taping that the warm recep-
tion she received in Ennis set
the town apart from her
other polka destinations.
“What I really like down
here are the people,” Mollie
said.

Police: Man clocked at 102
miles per hour on interstate

A Dallas man was arrested
Sunday night for allegedly
traveling almost one and a half
times the posted speed limit on
Interstate 45.
Ennis police spokesperson
Mike Hopson said Officer
Donnie Trull was observing
traffic on 1-45 at mile marker
248 when he reportedly spotted
a car traveling southbound at
102 miles an hour, well above
the 65 mile per hour speed limit.
Hopson said Trull managed
to pull the car over near mile
marker 245. He arrested the
driver, 35-year-old Jordan
Roberts, pending charges of
reckless driving. Roberts has
since been released.
Reckless driving, a misde-
meanor in Texas, is defined as
driving a vehicle “in willful or
wanton disregard for the safe-
ty of persons or property.”
It is punishable by fines not
exceeding $200 and/or incar-
ceration no more than 30 days.
Lawmakers move on $ 5B budget deficit
AUSTIN (AP) — Texas lawmakers are moving
to make up a $5 billion budget deficit.
Analysts from the Legislative Budget Board
told the House Appropriations Committee today
that the state is short $5 billion because they did
not make enough money available for Medicaid
and public schools.
The health program for the disabled, poor
and elderly will run out of money on March 31
and requires $4.4 billion to continue operating
through the end of the fiscal year. The Texas
Education Agency also needs $630 million to pay
schools districts what they are owed from the
Foundation School Program.
Committee Chairman Jim Pitts told the panel
that the bills must be paid. Lawmakers faced
with a $27 billion budget deficit in 2011 inten-
tionally underfunded Medicaid and cut $5.4 bil-
lion from public schools.
City plans
elections:

Ennis is preparing for another
city commission election this
May, but one of the longtime vet-
erans on the board has
announced he’s bowing out of
the coming race.
The formal election date is
planned for May 11, with early
voting commencing April 29 and
running through May 7 at Ennis
City Hall. Commission seats up
for polling include Ward 2, Ward
4 and the mayor pro-tem seat, as
well as the city marshal. Those
positions are two-year terms.
Mayor Pro-Tern Bob Taylor,
who has served the city on the
commission for nearly two
decades, will end his term of
service as a _
commissioner
this May.
“I do not plan
to run for re-
election as
mayor pro-tem
of Ennis in the
May 2013 elec-
tion and I want
to take this
opportunity to
say ‘thanks’ to
all of the citizens of Ennis for
giving me the opportunity to
serve on the city commission for
18 years,” Taylor said in a pre-
pared statement.
“I have especially enjoyed
working with City Manager
Steve Howerton, Mayor Russell
Thomas and the rest of the city
commissioners. My thanks to the
staff at City Hall and to all of the
city employees that work in the
various departments. Ennis is
truly blessed to have so many
outstanding employees that real-
ly do a great job of serving all of
the citizens of our fine city.
“I will finish my last term in
May, and I know that there are
many great things in store for
our city in the years to come.
Thank you Ennis.”
Thomas weighed in at the for-
mal public meeting to thank
Taylor for his work over the
years.
“I’ve learned a lot from watch-
ing Bob Taylor,” Thomas said.
“I’ve been honored and blessed to
have had his strength, care and
compassion sitting on my right.
“Thank you from the bottom
of my heart,” he said to Taylor.
Vote coming
Polling for the Ward 2, Ward
4, mayor pro-tem and city mar-
shal positions is approaching
May 11 in Ennis. Early voting
will run April 29-May 7 at Ennis
City Hall.
