Police Dub Silent
Drunks As John Doe
There’s more John Does arrest- ,
ed by the Borger police for drunk-
ness than another persons, even
John Smiths or Joe Doakes, police
say.
Each week, John Does are
found totter,ng on the street and ,
taken to the Cby Jail for sobering j
up process by Borger police.
The increase in Burger s John
Docs isn't due to influx of John
Does in general, Police Chief Jack
Julicn explains. Instead, it’s due
to the prisoners themselves.
When a drunk becomes non-;
u m it l, the police simply dub
him John Doe for the duration of
his drunk. It's a convenient way
for referring to the prisoners
when they are incapable or non-
comittal, Julien said.
As soon as the prisoner is ca-
pable oi identifying himself, his
regular name is restored.
