Gridiron Heroes organization
presents a van to O’Neal
By Clark Partin
Friday was a special day
for O’Neal. He had told me
earlier in the week that he
was having a special visit on
Friday, June 10.
Chris Canales, who was in
Saturday Night Lights, and his
father, Eddie Canales, who
started the Spinal Cord Injury
Organization-GRIDIRON
HEROES- were bringing
O’Neal a van that was com-
pletely modified for people
with spinal injuries.
This van was equipped
with a lift and other items
needed for transporting
O’Neal. Chris was injured 3
years ago as he was playing
in his final game of his high
school career. He had re-
ceived several offers to play
college ball, but this accident
changed his plans for the fu-
ture. A year later his father
took him to a playoff game in
San Antonio and a young man
also got hurt in this game. At
this time, Chris told his father
that they must do something to
help that family. At this point
they started Gridiron Heroes.
With the help of 24 High
School Booster Clubs across
the state of Texas, they were
able to get this van for O’Neal.
Their address is Gridiron He-
roes- 1664 Royal Palm-
Schertz, Tx. 78154.

O’Neal was able to go to
church this past Sunday since
he had this van. He is hoping
to be able to get out more and
plans on watching those
Tenaha Tigers this fall.
O’Neal is having a birth-
day party on Saturday, June
18. His birthday is not until
the 21st but a lot of people
were wanting to see him to
celebrate, so they are having
it a few days early. He is also
planning on leaving for Hous-
ton in the near future to get
some aggressive physical
therapy.
We all wish him well
while he is in the big city.
On Saturday, June 18 at
7:00pm, the Benford Chapel
Baptist Church is sponsoring
an Appreciation for O’Neal.
There will be Gospel singing
along with a guest speaker,
Rev. Tony Morris from San
Augustine, Texas. Hope to
see everyone there.
This is the van that was presented to O’Neal Mitchell Friday. It is equipped for
transporting him to and from all events he is hoping to attend. Photo by Clark Partin

Timpson ISD board hears TAKS update,
discusses changes in administrative team
By Nancy Alexander
Timpson ISD board of di-
rectors met Tuesday evening
hearing an update on the
TAKS results, discussing fine
from TCEQ, and approved
placing tax property back on
the roll.
Following the review of
check payments list, the board
was addressed by Mary Lynn
Tinkle who presented an up-
date on the TAKS results. She
said this was preliminary data,
a first report on TAKS and
there will be another report in
August or September. This
data collected helps with plans
for the fall on which areas are
the weakest and which are the
highest in the education of the
students. The report gives a
2005 percentage of the pass-
ing rate and the State passing
standard (the percentage of

cently advised by the U.S.

questions to be answered cor-
rectly in order to pass). It pro-
vides a 2004 percent passing
rate for comparison purposes
for the local and across the
state to help with comparisons.
With the information available,
Timpson showed in elementary
that 100% of the 3rd grade
passed the reading portion. This
state percentage of passing
was 92%. In order to pass this
section of the test, the students
had to correctly answer 67%
of the questions. In 2004,
According to Sheriff New-
ton Johnson, two juveniles
were apprehended early Sun-
day morning, June 12, 2005,
after they were caught inside
one of the school buildings in
Joaquin, Texas.
Sheriff Johnson reports that
on Sunday morning, about 1:30
am, the juveniles were appre-
hended by Chief Deputy Kent
Shaffer and Deputy Joey
Haley. The schools involved
were the Joaquin High School
and Elementary School.
The juveniles had somehow
obtained keys to the school
buildings and there was no
forced entry. These two juve-
niles were later released to
their parents.
Timpson 3rd graders claimed
a 99% passing in reading.
In math, Timpson showed
18% more passed than in 2004.
There is concern about the sci-
ence section of the testing,
with Timpson showing only
65% passing as compared to
the state rate passing of 64%.
The teachers are already de-
veloping a curriculum to aide
in helping students climb to a
higher knowledge in science.
According to officials, the
cafeteria was damaged more
than other buildings with with
an estimated cost of around
$2,000.00. Most of the build-
ings in the high school were
vandalized.
