police officers and firefighters

forcement officer, Tom Reader,
and Deputy Chief of the Tenaha

The Shady Grove Missionary
Baptist Church Building Fund
Committee is sponsoring a Con-
cert Event and Symposium for
January 19th at 4 pm in the
Q.M. Martin Auditorium at
Panola College. The event is to
honor King.
Timpson City Council
Meeting time has been
changed from 7 p.m. to 5:30
p.m. the third Tuesday of each
month
Concert
Southside Baptist Church,
Carthage, Texas, presents Jan.
25-7 p.m. Greater Vision No
admission charge. Love offer-
ing will be taken.
Do Sa Do Square
DanceClub
The Do Sa Do square dance
club began lessons again this
year on January 10th at the nu-
trition center on loop 500 in
Center, Texas. Lessons on
January 17,and 24th are free.
Teens dance free for the dura-
tion of the class. Club caller
Mike Mayeux will instruct all
classes. We’re a fun group, so
join us each Thursday at 7:30
p.m. for a really good time. For

SOUNDS OF SWING
The Shelby County Chamber
of Commerce Fine Arts season
will hold the second perfor-
mance of the season on Satur-
day, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. at the
Center High School Cafetorimn.
Shelby Regional Medi cal Cen-
ter and the Center Noon Lions
Club are event sponsors.
The party will feature the
SOUNDS OF SWING perform-
ing many classic big band ar-
rangements of the 1930’s and
40’s and 50’s. These selections
were made famous by the leg-
endary bands of the swing era
that America loved dancing and
listening to in the golden age of
good music.
Friends of the Arts season
tickets holders will receive their
tickets in the mail by Jan. 12.
Additional individual tickets are
available for $25, by dialing the
Chamber office at 936-598-
3682 to order tickets for pickup
or mail.
Fire Department, Larry Terry.
The plaques have pictures of
New York City Firemen raising the
American Flag while in the back-
ground is the destruction of the
World Trade Centers. There is
also a new stamp which repre-
sents “United We Stand”. The
presentation honors all law en-
forcement officers and firemen in
Shelby County.
The ceremony was well at-
tended with Pastor Bill Holmes
offering prayer for the opening.

“The Star Spangled Banner”.
Postmaster Smith acknowledged
visiting area and county officials
and Tenaha Mayor George Bow-
ers read a Proclamation which
declared the 11th of January
“United We Stand Day”. Tenaha
I.S.D., City councilmen, and
County law enforcement officials
were present. Judge “Dock”
Watson, J.P Larry Jones, and
Constable David Vickery were in
attendance. Methodist Church
Pastor Jerry Burnette closed the
day’s event with prayer.

Second Place winner of the Big Buck Contest was James Butler with a 62.50 buck shot on the 20th of November.
Third place went to Dan Husband with 56.50 points and the $100.00 winner was Ward Twinning. Entrees for 1991

Timpson Council okays
assistance to school, and
makes offer on property
The Timpson City Council met
for their monthly meeting on Tues-
day, January 15,2002, at 5:30 PM.
Mayor McDonald and the four
council members were present.
Councilwoman Janell Baker was
absent. Attendees were Randy
Blanks of David Waxman, Inc.,
Billie Gayle Bryan, Mae Mosley,
Pat Oates of Goodwin-Lasiter,
Inc., TISD Superintendent Dale
Pitts, Cecil and Kay Whitton,
Jerry Wood, Fire Chief Billy
Hailey and the Timpson Volunteer
Fire Department.
Jerry Wood addressed the
Council on behalf of the Timpson
Chamber of Commerce to ask
permission to have a circus in So-
So Park on April 1, 2002. The
Council approved the use of So-
So Park on that date.
Jerry Wood also discussed the
use of the antennae at City Hall
to relay a signal from the Cham-
ber of Commerce’s computer lab
to the T-l line at TISD. He stated
that in order to do this a public
access computer would need to
be placed on City Hall property.
The Council approved this.
Dr. Pitts addressed the Coun-
cil about the school district’s fi-
nancial situation. He asked if the
City could do anything to help the
school district with utilities. The
Council voted to remove the de-
mand meter charges at the school.
Randy Blanks of David
Waxman, Inc., presented the
Council with a resolution setting
just compensation for the lots the
City would like to acquire from
Cobb Lumber for the purpose of
building two new ground storage
tanks. The Council passed the
resolution and an offer was pre-
sented to Mrs. Cobb for consid-
eration.
Fire Chief Billy Hailey ad-
dressed the Council regarding the
fire department’s need for a new
pumper truck. The present truck
is 20 years old and in poor condi-
tion. He asked the Council to
consider purchasing a new truck.
The Council voted to advertise for

A program sponsored by the
Shady Grove Missionary Baptist
Church Building Fund Committee
will be held at Panola College in
the Q.M. Martin Auditorium be-
ginning at 4 p.m. January 19th.
The symposium rooms will be in
other areas of the college. This
special event and Symposium is
to commemorate Martin Luther
King Jr. Day. There will be musi-
cal and dance talents along with
the seminars to be provided.
The surrounding communities
are invited to attend and partici-
pate in what the committee ex-
pects to be a most entertaining and
stimulating event.
Among those to be in the audi-
torium, is Rev. R.L. Davis of
Pleasant Green Baptist Church in
Longview. He will be there with
his congregation’s choir.
Rev. Davis is a 1960 graduate
of Texas Southern University in
Houston with a B.A. in Econom-
ics. He is graduate from Texas
Baptist Seminary, and also holds
a real estate license. He is per-
sonally active in the East Texas
Baptist State Convention in Tyler
and is General Secretary of East
Texas Baptist/Longivew District
Association. Davis is Dean of the
Congress of Christian Education
with the Longview Ministerial
Alliance where he serves as Trea-
surer.
Rev. Davis has an extensive
educational background in minis-
try and well as his career. He has
been actively employed through-
out his years with several bank-
ing institutions in Texas, Kansas,
California, and Ohio.
The program scheduled may
speakers and choirs for the day.
From 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., in the
auditorium will be Edna Golden
and the St. John Baptist Church
