TENAHA— What a great
event in Tenaha Friday
afternoon. So many dignitaries
on hand. Senator Nichols was
there. He is a really nice guy
from Jacksonville — East
Texas’ own homegrown boy.
He was fun to talk to. Also,
met Congressman Louie
Gohmert. He was easy going
and good to talk to. Had a
good sense of humor about
him. Nancy saw Wayne
Christian there also, but he
had to leave early for a
funeral. She said he sure was
hungry. Too hungry to share
his plate. He’s got a pretty
good sense of humor also.
Didn’t get his picture though,
since he left early. Melba Gillis
was very active that day. She
stays busy all the time. Saw
Doyce Bailey serving the food.
Um Um good. The chicken was
tender and so delicious. Those
Shelby County Cookers are to
be commended. Nancy said she
has to compliment Randy
Whatley on his hospitality. He
let people go into his office and
eat in the cool. She said it sure
was nice inside and his office
building is just beautiful.
Enjoyed the food and the
company.

I am having peas and
combread for lunch and chicken
spaghetti...don’t that sound
good? Most of the time it is
sandwiches for lunch or ham-
burgers. We watered the yard for
at least 2 hours last night. Lord,
we sure could use a good soak-
ing rain and I expect when you
decide to give us one it will be a
gusher. I imagine you must get
tired of me always telling you
what I need instead of thanking
you for what I have. I do thank
you because you have blessed me
with a wonderful family, chil-
dren, grands and greats and all
of you, my neighbors.
We had a “Back To School
Fellowship” Sunday night after
church. We had ice cream
sundies and cake and cookies. I
am looking forward to seeing our
kids play ball.
I was always glad to start
back to school so I could be with
my friends. I had the same group
in my classes with exception of
one or two that moved to
Crockett during my years there.
There were about 35 of us and
each year we have a reunion for
one night and one day. It is so
much fun, many are missing,
some who just don’t come and
others having their party in a
better place, heaven.
Our friends, Danny, Rose,and
Luis Dixon from Mississippi
had visitors this week for a few
days. One boy was from Colum-
bia, Edie, and he came bearing
presents for Rose andLuis from
Rose’s Mother and the other was
Francisco who is from Mexico.
I don’t expect Luis got much of
his English practiced with them
but I could be wrong... .they may
speak better English than we do.
I can speak quite a bit of Span-
ish and my youngest son, Max,
speaks perfect Spanish as he
does business in Central
America most of the time. It is a
beautiful language. We will be
starting our WMU (Women’s
Missionary Union) of Texas Sep-
tember 11th. We have our meet-
ing the second Tuesday morning
of each month until the end of
May and then start again in Sep-
tember. It is a great opportunity
to get acquainted with our for-
eign missionaries as well as our
home missions. We have a
speaker at each meeting and a
breakfast snack before the
speaker. These ladies do many
volunteer duties for organiza-
tions all around our area and give
generously to our Missionaries.
Beth Tipton will be the President
this coming year and I know she
will do an outstanding job.
I love children jokes...The
Sunday School teacher asked the
children in his class “Who led the
Children of Israel across the Red
Sea? No one knew. She picked
out a new boy, Luis, and asked
him—”It wasn’t me,” he said,
we’ve just moved here from Mis-
sissippi!.
Someone asked a friend—
What color are your Pastor’s
eyes?. The friend said, “I don’t
know” when he prays he shuts
his eyes and when he preaches I
shut my eyes” Now, this is not
me, I pay attention because when
I was little my Mother pinched a
plug out of us if we acted up or
even thought about it. My Dad
was the song leader and once,
just once, I got to sit on the back
row with my friends and natu-
rally we were giggling and
talking...suddenly the music
stopped, my Dad snapped his
fingers and pointed at me...He
did not say a word then or even
later but from then on I was hon-
ored to sit right next to my
Mother. Today I realize how
much of an honor it really was.
What precious memories I have
of my childhood and my entire
life. I used to wonder why we
went to church more than my
friends at school, or most of
them, and now I know...I hope
my boys can say the same and
hear the same from their children.
Til next time, God Bless,
Ma.rfha.nn
