Thursday Already! La Tenaha
Voice ofDoyce
Welcome back- TISD stu-
dents, Fran, Clark and Cara
Partin, you readers just to men-
tion a few. Wish I could tell you
that I have been on a cruise (just
anywhere), a trip to Europe, or a
stay at home giving attention to
cob webs or such. Just have to
say that I have been busy. Flo-
rence and Nancy have been so
nice to me in not giving up my
space completely and just feel
they will find somewhere to put
this article.
Much more traffic through
town with the start of school yes-
terday. Has been so much activ-
ity at the school campus all sum-
mer and know the students have
had some adjustments to over-
come. The administration cer-
tainly worked hard to see that all
issues were addressed for a
smooth start. Just like most
places, unforeseen things come
up, but I am sure they can be
handled.
The Tenaha Hope Project
birthday party this past Friday
was well attended. So many of
with my support vehicle be-
tween us. Some hills started
and Rick caught up with me.
For about 10 miles we rode to-
gether. He would gain on the
uphill and I would pass him
again on the downhills. I was
trying to stay on the shoulder
as directed by the officials, but
there was a lot of gravel and
cracks in the road. On one long
down hill I was dodging cracks
and gravel and Rick used to
smooth surface on the left of
the white line to get a gap on
me. He used small gear and
high cadence to increase the
gap uphill and ended up gain-
ing another 3 minutes back on
the stage.
Stage V was relatively
downhill and would end up
being my most memorable
stage; where I learned a lot
about drafting, climbing hills,
and sprinting to the finish. I
had talked to several racers
about getting on the left of the
rumble strips and was satisfied
I could do it without penalty,
under the pretense of avoiding
hazards. As usual I got a gap
on Rick off the start, but he
soon came back to me. This
time when he passed I crossed
the rumble strips to the smooth
our elected officials were present
as well as Shelby County citi-
zens. Since I am a member of
their board, they put me to work
serving Tyson chicken. Along
with the tasteful bar-b-cue
chicken was potato salad, baked
beans, salsa and chips and Re-
publican Ladies desserts. Would
have been impossible for anyone
to go away with a hunger feel-
ing. The clinic is heading into
their fifth year and their goal is
to have an affordable dental
clinic here in Tenaha. At present
time, they have a long term lease
on the property between Medico
and Cuts Plus and for a kickoff,
a ribbon cutting held by the
Shelby County Chamber of
Commerce was held there. The
temperature was above 100 and
most everyone had a bottle of
chilled water in their hands. We
all say “Happy Birthday” and
wish you many more Tenaha
Clinic.
Mark your calendars for the
Tenaha Masonic Lodge fund
raiser that is scheduled for Sep-
tember 21. They serve brisket or
chicken breast with all the trim-
mings. You can either eat at the
lodge or do take out. They start
serving about 11:00 a.m. and
continue imtil all is sold. The cost
is still just S6.00 and these mon-
ies are used for TISD scholar-
ships. Make plans to have a de-
licious meal that day.
October 13 is the date selected
for Shelby County Fall Cleanup.
As usual, dumpsters will be here
on the square starting at least by
day light. They probably will
pick them up as near noon as
possible. Maybe the weather will
start cooling off and you can start
on getting prepared.
Birthday greetings this week
to Carolyn (Ben) Hooker,
Ashlynne Broadus, Cody May,
Stravis Steele and Woody Cham-
berlain. Anniversary greetings to
Cindy and Shane Hughes and
Lisa and Elton Barton. Our youth

surface, and drafted down the
hill passing him. When he
came around again on the up-
hill I got right behind him al-
most touching wheels and let
him pace me up the hill match-
ing his gear selection and ca-
dence. We traded back and
forth the rest of the way, I
learned to keep the cadence
high on the uphill and he
started using his biggest gear
on the downhill. We kept sit-
ting on each others wheel for
awhile and then trying unsuc-
cessfully to leave each other
behind. After 51 miles we were
neck and neck, coming into
Talkeetna. There was a left
turn, onto the main street,
about 500 yards from the fin-
ish. I took the inside turn and
peddled like crazy down the
strait, out sprinting Rick by 3
seconds to the line.
Stage VI would be the last
long road stage and looked to
be relatively downhill, but
turned out to be fairly flat and
the stiff headwind made it feel
uphill. I was wishing for a re-
peat of the previous days draft-
ing to help in the wind, but
Rick had told me before the
start that he had an upset stom-
ach and could not make that

pace again. I was unsure
whether he was serious or was
just trying to catch me off
guard and gap me at the mass
start, so I cranked hard off the
line and never saw Rick for the
rest of the day finishing about
30 minutes ahead of him. It
was a long day by myself in
the wind, that had a little bit of
excitement with a bear being
spotted on the course about 10
miles from the finish (thank-
fully he was gone by the time I
came by).
Stage VII was a fairly flat
and fast 85 mile time trial. By
this time I had learned a little
about time trials and my head
was really into the race. I
pushed as hard as I could
through the entire course and
posted my best time ever aver-
aging about 15 miles per hour.
The finish line was lined with
cheering people and came with
a bittersweet feeling of being
and they were all in Sunday
School and church.
We all have so many things to
“Praise the Lord” about. Just to
mention a few. The Packwoods
have a new baby girl. Jan
McDonald has finished her radia-
tion. Aunt Thelma Wagstaff is
having a birthday this Simday and
you are invited for cake at her
home in the afternoon. Mr.
Anstead is out of the hospital and
back in assisted living in Athens.
The Dempsey’s have a new
double wide on FM 947 across
from Eddie and Ruth Duke. Little
ones have already finished their
first Ml day of school. The kid-
ney transplant from Cara to her
father went very smoothly. Cara
is teaching in Arp and enjoying
every minute of it. The TISD
band played three songs at the
Tenaha Clinic birthday party last
Friday and they sounded “great”.
Our Taylor is in sixth grade in the
Nacogdoches school system and
she told her grandfather yesterday
that she is the only one that knows
how to play an instrument. She
glad to suffering was over,
while at the same time, regret-
ting that this epic adventure had
ended.
owes that to Tenaha school.
Stephen Smith just got married.
His new bride is from Florida.
We also praise the Lord for
Randy Whatley who placed pine
church pews outside on the
square. We are grateful for his
thoughtfulness. They were in
memory of J.E. Figley and
Charlie Samuels III. In Honor of
Judge Lenard Anstead.
Monday is Labor Day. City
Hall will be closed. We get ex-
cited over having a three day
weekend.
Can’t close this article with-
out letting you know that Bear
no longer resides at 6765 FM
947. Eddie and I both agree that
our days of having a dog have
come and gone.
Best bring this to a close. See
you in church. Doyce

"Well
By Roy Blake, Jr.
Well, you’ve heard the say-
ing that “a man’s home is his
castle” and now, because of
some
good leg-
islation
passed
this last
session,
our right
to protect
our prop-
erty has
been expanded. A new law,
called the “Castle Doctrine”,
allows property owners to pro-
tect themselves and their prop-
erty without fear of being sued
by the burglar.
I don’t know about you, but
I thought you could do that al-
ready. It seems that over the
years criminals rights had been
expanded and so now this
clears the matter up and gives
us law abiding citizens the
right to protect ourselves and
our property. This was a win
for the good guys, if you asked
me.
Well, another good piece of
legislation from this past ses-
sion was a bill that increased
funding for our rural fire de-
partments. I sure do have a
lot of admiration and respect
for our firefighters and other
emergency responders. Hav-
ing been involved in the space
shuttle recovery efforts a few
years back and the more re-
cent hurricane Rita cleanup ef-
forts, I can tell you that these
fine men and women do an
outstanding job when the pres-
sure is on.
I can’t help but tell the story
about the volunteer fire depart-
ment that was called to the
scene of a farmer’s pasture on
fire. By the time the old fire
truck made it to the fire, there
were people lined all along the
road, watching the fire spread
through the pasture. The fire
truck sat at the top of the hill
for just a second, when the
next thing you knew the truck
came rolling down the hill,
busting through the fence, into
the pasture and ran right
through the middle of the fire,
finally comingto a stop.
The firemen quickly jumped
out of the truck and extin-
guished the fire. One of the
bystanders commented on how
brave that fire truck driver was
and what a great maneuver he
had used when he drove the
truck right through the fire.
The driver, dazed and ex-
hausted, responded,... ”it
wasn’t like that at all...the
brakes failed again on that old
truck and I couldn’t get it
stopped!”
Well, now our volunteer fire
departments will have some
much need funds to repair or
replace some of that old equip-
ment.
Next time you see a
firefighter or other emergency
responder tell them thanks for
what they do.
Well, that’s all for now.

Forgetfulness is a very com-
mon tendency on the part of all
men. Some forgotten biblical
recorded instances are: Gen.
40:39 The Chief Butler forgot
Joseph; Judges 7:3; the Israel-
ites forgot God; Matt. 16:5 The
disciples forgot to take bread on
their journey; 2 Peter 1:9 some
forgot that they were once
purged from their sins: It should
be no surprise then that the Bible
contains many exhortations con-

cerning remembrance. Eccl.
12:1 “Remember thy creator”;
Num. 15:39 “Remember and do
all my commandments” Exod.
20:8 “Remember the Sabbath
the Sabbath day, to keep it
holy.”
Luke 17:32 “Remember
Lot’s wife” Luke 22:19 “And
he took bread, and gave thanks,
and brake it, and gave unto
them, saying, This is my body
which is given for you: this do
in remembrance of me.”
Because man is prone to for-
get, God constantly calls him to
remember. Consider the follow-
ing and Peter’s words, 2 Peter
1:15“ Moreover I will endeavor
that ye may be able after my
decease to have these things al-
ways in remembrance.”
1. I have a God to glorify.
Glorify means to magnify in
worship; to adore, to exalt. 1
Cor. 6:20 “For ye are bought
with a price: therefore glorify
God in your body, and in your
spirit, which are God’s.” We
should have these things always
in remembrance and magnify
God always in worship, in ado-
ration, and exaltation for His
goodness toward us.
2.1 have a body to control:
Rom.8:13 "For if ye live after
the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye
through the spirit do mortify the
deeds of the body, ye shall live.”
Paul taught these same things to
Felix as he: Act 24:25 “rea-

the summer and begin the fall.

soned of righteousness, temper-
ance, and judgment to come” He
also practiced the same body
control he taught:
1 Cor. 9:27 "But I keep un-
der my body and bring it into
subjection; lest that by means,
when I have preached to others,
I myself should be a castaway.”
Controlling our body includes
controlling our mind and
thoughts, Matt. 15:19-20 "For
out of the heart proceed evil
thoughts, murders, adulteries,
fornications, thefts, false wit-
ness, blasphemies; These things
are the things which defile a
man: but to eat with unwashed
hands defileth not a man.”
Controlling our tongue, Prov.
6:16-17. “These six things doth
the Lord hate; yea seven are an
abomination unto him: A proud
look, a lying tongue, and hands
that shed innocent blood, a heart
that deviseth wicked imagina-
tions, feet that be swift in run-
ning to mischief, a false witness
that speaketh lies, and he that
soweth discord among breth-
ren.” The control of our body is
something we should always
have in remembrance.
3.1 have a debt to pay: Rom.
8:12-13 “Therefore, brethren,
we are debtors, not to flesh, to
live after the flesh. F or if ye live
after the flesh, ye shall die: but
if ye through thef Spirit do mor-
tally the deeds of the body, ye
shall live.” Matt. 22:21 “They
say unto him, Caesar’s. Then
sayith he unto them, Render
therefore unto Caesar the things
which are Caesar’s and to God
the things that are God’s.” Wor-
ship service, and working for
God is not only a privileged but
a debt we owe.
4. I have an accounting to
make some day: Rom .14:11-12
“For it is written, As I live, saith
the Lord, every knee shall bow
to me, and every tongue shall
confess to God. So then every
one of us shall give account of
himself to God.”
Have these things always in
remembrance, they determine
our eternity. Not whether we
will have an eternity, but where
we will spend it.
