The story of the “Gift of Giving” in Tenaha
By Nancy Alexander
Love, dedication, endurance,
and the gift of giving all describe
the Partin family in Tenaha.
This family has endured
through very difficult times over
the past few years since Clark
began suffering with failing kid-
neys. His wife, Fran, has given
a vital part of herself to her hus-
band as she was the donor of a
kidney to Clark back in 2001.
Sadly, the kidney had hemor-
rhaging problems just after it
was placed into Clark’s body
and eventually the ailing kidney
took it’s toll. For the past ap-
proximately 11 months he has
undergone dialysis in
Nacogdoches for three days a
week. These treatments are
lengthy and greatly tax his
strength.
On a happier note, good news
was on it’s way, as both his
daughters, Kara and Libby, were
tested and found to be a match
with their dad. The fact that all
four family members are a medi-
cal match is quite a blessing. The
younger daughter, Kara will be
the donor this week in San An-
tonio. The choice of which
daughter was made entirely by
the doctors.
All this surgery, which is
Wednesday morning, is taking
place at a time which will give
Kara a chance to recuperate be-
fore reporting to the Arp ISD for
school in just a couple of weeks.
Libby Partin is employed by the
Jacksonville Police Department
as a dispatcher but, of course,
she plans to be in San Antonio
to encourage and support her
family.
The Partins, both Fran and
Clark, have remained very ac-
tive in school, community, and
their church (Tenaha Church of
Christ) even while Clark was not
feeling all that well. They have
always opened their door to en-
tertain friends and hold recep-
tions at their home and for many
occasions. She is on the City
council in Tenaha and Clark is
on the school board. Fran is
employed by Tenaha ISD also.
Clark is retired from the school
as he was a teacher, coach, and
middle school principal. He also
has been photographer and cor-
respondent for the Timpson &
Tenaha News, Inc. since his re-
tirement.
Many Tenahaians have
pulled together in support of this
very loving family as they have
held fund-raisers to help assist
with the expense. Last May, sev-
eral brave men entered the
Womanless Beauty Pageant,
hairy legs and faces showing
everywhere. Even the “Queen”
was chosen. A lot of fun for a
good friend and a good cause.
Clark Partin has expressed
his thanks to everyone for all the
help they have given. He also
wants to thank his daughters
Libby and Kara for going
through the testing before the
surgery. He is grateful to both
of them and thankful that both
were so willing to go through
this lifesaving step with him. His
wife, Fran, has been very strong
through everything and he is
very appreciative of her support.
Words cannot express the
sincerest of hopeful wishes for
a full recovery for Clark.

with a new kidney for Clark. Clark, Fran and Kara Partin are ready for the surgery ahead.

Historian Harry Noble to present
program at TAGHS August 15
By Sandra Brownlow
The Timpson Genealogy So-
ciety will host Harry Noble on
August 15, at 2:pm at the Gene-
alogy Library as the guest
speaker. Mr. Noble and his wife
Kelly live in San Augustine and
have presented programs in past
years. His program, Old San
Center man charged with murder
By Florence Reeh
A Center resident, Jimmie
Odessa Smith, is in Shelby
County jail awaiting trial as he
is charged for the aggravated
kidnapping and in the course
of committing the kidnapping
of Odaliah Brown Sanders, did
then and there intentionally or
knowingly caused the death of
Sanders.
According to an affidavit by
Texas Ranger Maskunas, the
victim was observed being ab-
ducted at gunpoint at a bank
in Center and forced to with-
draw a large sum of money
($10,000). It was also reported
that during the transaction of
withdrawal, the teller reported
to a person in management
that Sanders was soundlessly
mouthing the words “Help
me”. This citizens approached
Mrs. Sanders vehicle at the
bank from the rear left side and
reported that a person lying in
the back floor of the car could
be seen. Sanders began to drive
forward and the person who
approached the vehicle asked
her to stop but she said she
couldn’t. At this point, the sus-
pect was seen placing Odaliah
Brown Sanders in the rear of
the vehicle at gunpoint after
she had withdrawn the money.
Center Police Department
Chief Walter Shofner, stated
that the observer of the inci-
dent followed Sander’s vehicle
which had escaped for a short
time and was later found,
wrecked and abandoned. Sand-
ers’ body was found in the trunk
of the vehicle.
A massive manhunt for the
suspect that entailed a high speed
chase began.
Assisted by law enforcement
from all over, horses and blood-
hounds and helicopters, and con-
cerned citizens, the suspect was
apprehended.
He was taken to Shelby
County jail, charged with capi-
tal murder.
According to Shelby County
Sheriff Newton Johnson, Smith a
26 year old white male confessed
to the murder and also to the ab-
duction of Billie Sue Payne, wife
of Vance Payne who died recently
of injuries received by an intruder
into his home.
Antonio Road, The King’s
Highway El Camino Real
de los Tejas, is one that we
have wanted to hear for
some time. The history of
“El Camino Real” AKA
“The Old San Antonio
Road” has touched the lives
of at least one of our ances-
tors in most cases. Many of
you know Mr. Noble for his
work on preserving the old
San Augustine Newspapers
and the history books he has
written about the area.
A sign on the highway near
Mr. Noble’s home when he was
a boy read mThe Old San An-
tonio Road. The King’s High-
way was blazed in 1691 by Don
Domingo Teran de los Rios,
first provential governor of
Texas so expressed and or-
dered by the King of Spain”.
Mr. Noble will cover from
the 1500’s to the present about
the development of the Old San
