Dr. Martin Luther King

Students of the Timspon
ISD assembled in the high
school auditorium at 10:00 a.
m. on Monday for a program
honoring the late Dr. Martin
Luther King. School
administrators,community
leaders, Timpson ISD employ-
ees, and THS students pre-
sented a program remember-
ing the legacy of Dr. King.
Dr. Leland Moore wel-
comed those in attendance
and reviewed Dr. King’s ac-
complishments for all citizens.

speaker who had a part on the

speech that Dr. King himself
delivered. Several of the TISD
staff(whom we call the
Richardson sisters) and their
nieces sang two gospel songs.

them to study hard, be faithful
to themselves and to God and
strive to emulate the teachings
of Dr. King. TISD board

City of Tenaha sets election for May 13

The Regular Meeting of the
Council of the City of Tenaha
met on January 16, 2006 at
5:15pm in the Tenaha City Hall.
All council members were
present. The minutes of the pre-
vious meeting were read and
approved as presented. Next on
the agenda was a request for
Waiver of Pilot(Payment in Lieu
of Taxes) for the Tenaha Hous-
ing Authority. Verna Stewart,
executive director of Housing
Authority, presented the re-
quest to the council. After
some discussion the council
decided to table this request.
The council set up the City of
Tenaha Council Election for
Cobb Industries recently contributed $5,000 toward new play-
ground equipment for Timpson Elementary School.
Tracy Hooper, facility manager, said he recognized the need
for new equipment and was pleased that Cobb could con-
tribute toward making the new playground equipment a
reality.Dr. Leland R. Moore, Timpson ISD Superintendent
gratefully accepted the check from Cobb on behalf of the
district and said he wanted to personally thank Tracy Hooper,
Steven Burgay, Terrie Strahan and others at Cobb who
worked to make this possible.Bids have been received on
the playground equipment and the board approved a
vendor.After the new playground equipment is installed, the
playground area will be open to the community after school
and in the summer.
Tenaha Businessmen’s Club meets Bo, the drug dog

The Tenaha Businessmen
May 13, 2006 for mayor and
two council positions. The first
day to file for place on the bal-
lot is February 11, 2006. Last
day to file for place on ballot is
March 13, 2006. First day of
early voting is May 1, 2006.
Last day of early voting is May
9, 2006. First day to apply for
ballot by mail is March 14,
2006. Last day to apply for
ballot by mail is May 5, 2006.
Ruth Duke was appointed elec-
tion judge, Verna Stewart ap-
pointed election clerk, and
Doyce Bailey early voting
clerk. The Quarterly Invest-
ment Report was approved as
presented. Randy Whatley sent
a letter requesting that the city
help fund the “drug dog”. Af-
ter some discussion the coun-
cil voted on to give $1000.00
to help defer the cost of the
drug dog. A new ordinance
adopting guidelines for protec-
tion of drinking water supply
from contamination or pollution
had to be adopted by the coun-
cil. The council voted in favor
of the new ordinance. The
council also recognized Doyce
Bailey on her work during the
gas outage. She was able to
keep all citizens informed and
worked with the gas company
in getting gas cut back on in
everyone’s home. Great job
Doyce. Due to the extra work
needed with the new sewer
plant, the city hired a new em-
ployee. He is Abe Pellam.

Randy Whatley presided over
the meeting and Brother Jim
Bradley gave the opening
prayer. Mayor Bowers re-
ported that the sewer plant
was on line and in operation.
Mitch Menefee reported that
we have only had a few small
fires, but reminded everyone
not to do any burning. Since
this meeting I know that sev-
eral grass fires have been re-
ported in the area. Remember
No Burning...Bo Morris re-
ported that school was going
strong and basketball season
was looking good. Also the
next school board meeting is
scheduled for January 23. Don
Dial gave a report on the fi-
nancial statement of the club.
Fran Partin announced that the
yearly “Stone Soup Feast”
would be on Sunday, Febru-
ary 12 in the Tenaha ISD Caf-
eteria. Everyone is welcome

The Tenaha Fire Dept, responsed to a house fire Jan.16
around 4:30a.m. at the Barack apartments. Two
apartments were destoyed and the families lost most of
their stuff. Wood Fire Dept also helped with the fire.

City of Timpson awards water
treatment contract; orders election

A representative from
Goodwin Lassiter was present
at the City Council meeting
Tuesday at City Hall to discuss
and explain conditions of the
LAS Water Treatment Con-
tract. Coundil voted to award
the contract. Following this,
under old business, the coun-
cil ordered an election for May
13, 2006 (second Saturday).
All members of the council
were present except one.
Mayor Douglas McDonald
called the meeting to order and
Councilman Tim Magness
opened with prayer. A letter
from the Housing Authority
concerning Marshal Jeff Clopp
was read and dismissed.
