Tenaha ISD receives
Rural Technology Grant
Tenaha ISD was re-
cently awarded the Rural
Technology Grant.
Tenaha ISD was one of
only four schools in the
Region VII Educational
Service area that received
the grant in the amount of
$43,400. HOUSE BILL
2864 established a pilot
program for the state
grant program to finance
technology-based supple-
mental instruction to stu-
dents at the 6th through
12th grade.
The grant funds will be
used to equip Tenaha
ISD’s new distance-learn-
ing lab. The lab will be
used by our students,
teachers, and community
members to earn college
and/or dual credits. The
lab will also be available
for professional develop-
ment and/or workshops
for the Tenaha ISD’s fac-
ulty and staff.
In addition to the lab,
the funds will also help
Tenaha ISD establish a
method of student inter-
vention and dropout pre-
vention. This program will
allow our students who
fail a class to make up the
credit through a com-
puter-based credit recov-
ery program.
Mrs. Martha Boren,
Director of Academic Af-
fairs and grant writer for
this project stated, “We
are very excited about re-
ceiving this grant. The
funds will allow Tenaha
ISD to provide advanced
learning opportunities for
our students, teachers, and
community members.
Without the grant funds,
Tenaha ISD would not be
able to provide a credit
recovery program in order
for our students to gradu-
ate on time.”

January 2009 is School Board Recognition Month
Governor Rick Perry
has proclaimed January as
School Board Recognition
Month to build awareness
and understanding of the
vital function an elected
board of education plays
in our communities. The
Timpson ISD is joining
with other districts
throughout the state to
thank board members for
caring so much about the
future of every child en-
rolled in our public
schools.
“Texans benefit every
day from the dedicated
energies and countless
hours devoted by a group
of more than 7,000 men
and women across the
state. These public ser-
vants are elected to serve
by local citizens and re-
ceive no compensation for
their tireless efforts.
School board members
are extraordinary people
who voluntarily tackle the
enormous job of govern-
ing school districts. Their
actions and decisions af-
fect the present and future
lives of all our children,”
said Dr. Leland Moore,
Timpson ISD superinten-
dent.
“Even though we are
making a special effort
during January to show
appreciation to our school
board members, we recog-
nize their work reflects a
year-round commitment,”
Dr. Moore said. “Every
day trustees demonstrate
strength and dedication as
they focus on excellence
for their district programs,
their teachers, and most
importantly their students.
They unselfishly contrib-
ute their time and talents
toward the advancement
of public schools, and rep-
resent a continuing com-
mitment to local citizen
control and decision mak-
ing in education,” he said.
Autopsy ordered for
man killed in accident
Shelby County Sherriff
Newton Johnson reports
that on December 31,2008
at approximately 11:14 am,
the Shelby County Sheriff’s
Office received a 911 call
from Mr. Bob Smith, em-
ployee of North East Texas
Power Inc., who is believed
to be contracted by Deep
East Texas Electric Coop.
He advised the dispatcher
that there had been a work
related accident involving
one of their employees.
The accident occurred in
the Willow Grove Commu-
nity off Hwy 84 between
Tenaha and Joaquin.
Upon arrival, Deputy
Jim Matthews was able to
determine that a white male
in his mid 30’s from Okla-
homa had been killed in this
work related accident.
JP 3 Margie Anderson
pronounced the man de-
ceased and she has ordered
an autopsy. The name of the
deceased is being withheld
pending notification of next
of kin.
