TRUTH or TRADITION?
(continued)
Method of Baptism (4)
Last week we saw through the scriptures that the apostles baptized, showing the
need of baptism by their example. Paul said that there is one baptism (Ephesians
4:5), and that the same method should be taught in all of the churches (1 Cor.
4:17). We also introduced the scripture in 1 Cor. 4:13, “Is Christ divided? was
Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? ” Notice the ref-
erence to Christ, Paul, and baptized in the name of Paul. Paul is showing us that
he wasn’t crucified, Christ was; and that they were not baptized in the name of
Paul, but in the name of Christ (which is Jesus). Now, let’s look at their examples.
In Act 2:38, “...Peter says; Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name
of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy
Ghost.” This coincides with what Paul said in 1 Cor 4:13. In Acts chapter 8, we
have the history of Paul before he was converted, wrecking havoc in the churches,
forcing the apostles and other to flee and preach else where. Philip is preaching in
Samaria, calls for the apostles to come to pray for them that they might receive the
Holy Ghost. Luke records that Philip had baptized the people in Samaria. Acts
8:16; “(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them; only they were baptized in the
name of Lord Jesus.)” Here is scriptural confirmation again that the early church
baptized in the name of Jesus. Peter, preaching the first time to the Gentiles, sees
them receive the Holy Ghost and commands them to be baptized. Acts 10:48
records; “And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.”
(which is Jesus). Paul, following his conversion, is preaching in Ephesis, telling
them that their baptism by John was only unto repentance, telling them that they
needed to be baptized again. Acts 19:4-5; “Then said Paul, John verily baptized
with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on
him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this,
they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Matthew 28:19 says to be bap-
tized in the NAME of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost. To obey this
scripture, you must discover the name, and not repeat the titles. Acts 4:12 says;
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heav-
en given among men, whereby we must be saved.” We have now shown, through
the scriptures, that baptism is essential; “He that believeth and is baptized shall be
saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” (Mark 16:16); and that the
method was immersion (Baptist not Sprinkler), in the NAME of JESUS
CHRIST.
Don’t accept tradition for facts. Ask yourself, WHAT DOES THE BOOK SAY?
