A subtle thing—music. It makes you sad—you can'
not understand why ; it brings laughter mingled
with the tears, and yet you cannot explain its power
over you. Unconsciously, inevitably, music sways at

is irresistible, and yet always its influence is for good.
All the subtleties of music, all the delicate grada-

(From Valley Mill* Tribune)
Last Saturday afternoon while re-
turning home from Clifton, Henry
Snide'- and Silas Johnson had a smash
up with their cars on the long grade
this side of Tom M. Pool’s residence
on the Clifton and Valley Mills road.
Henry- was coming this way with the
steep grade helping him make time,
and at a turn he and Silas met, jam
up. Silas' car took off the fenders
and running board, broke the spokes
out of both wheels oo he right side of
Henry's car, while Johnson's car lost
a wheel and otherwise smashed up.
Luckily no one was hurt, though both
cars bad full capacity of passengers.
"Die manner in which the whole Ger-
man nation, apparently, ia resenting
the peace terms submitted by the al-
lies is evidence sufficient to convince
the most ardent enemies of the for-
mer empire that the treaty is dr.xs-
tic enough; but, because of its vol-
ume, the casual reader may not ap-
preciate even more than one or two
phases of the severity of the docu-
ment. For instance, have you stop-
ped to think how much land Germany
is losing in the final settlement of
this war? The San Antonio Light re-
calls these interesting, almost startl-
ing figures:
‘'Before the war the area of the
German empire in Europe was 208,-

miles in the Sarre Basin have been
taken temporarily, and in other terri-
tory, amounting to 8,572 square miles
the population will have the rignt at
a later period to decide whether they
wish to remain in or out of the Ger-
man empire. So far as the continent
of Europe is considered, therefore,
Germany has lost 35,055 square miles
and may lose additional territory that
will bring the total of her loss up to
44,365 square miles. This is more
than one-fifth of her territory in Eu-
rope.
“The vast extent of Germany’s col-
