Oh, the agony of defeat on
the heels of the thrill of
victory.
The Dublin Lions invaded
Comanche Indian territory
with surprising strength
and success and what
everyone expected didn’t
happen. It was supposed to
be a close game with the
Indians rated a three
touchdown favorite
although no one expected it
to be that lopsided.
The Lions quickly
encountered Murphy’s Law
as did all Lion teams last
week against Comanche - if
anything could go wrong, it
did.
It was similar to what
happened to Merkel against
Dublin two weeks earlier.
Although the 61-14 score
didn’t reflect it, the Lions
and Indians were basically
even in talent. The Lions
were inside the Indian five
three times and didn’t score
although one effort by
QuarterbackBradyHoUeman
appeared to be a touchdown
but wasn’t allowed. One
other time, the Lions got
inside the Indian 20 and
couldn’t punch it in. Lions
Coach Bob Cervetto noted
that 28 points could have
the complexion of the
game.
Cervetto told his squad to
forget the game, learn the
lessons and move on,
remembering the team is
4-2 and still in the hunt and
to be dealt with in the
district race.
Dublin came out of the
game with a number of
injuries including a broken
hand by Izzy Torres
although none of the others
were considered serious.
Zoey Kendall returned to
action from an injury and
was a force receiving the
ball with nine receptions for
almost 150 yards.
The Lions moved the ball
on a consistent basis, mostly
through the air as Holleman
surpassed the 300 yard
mark. Dirk DeVries again
was another favorite target
but the Indians were able to
shut down the Dublin
running game.
That was one thing the
Lions couldn’t do as
Comanche ran the ball and
ate up the clock. Big plays
by the Indians were back
breakers for the Lions as
the Dublin defense bottled
up Comanche time after
time but Comanche scored
on every possession except
at the end of the game. The
lions did stop Merkel on
the Wing T, Cervetto noted,
but Comanche was quick
off the line and hit the

creases.
The Indian offense from a
wing T was similar to that
of Hico which the Lions also
couldn’t contain. The
Indians had a senior laden
line that led the way for a
time consuming offense
that kept the ball away from
Dublin’s explosive offense
and added to the
frustration.
The game against Clyde
this week will be like seeing
a 7-on-7 contest as both
teams take to the air,
Cervetto noted. They are
quick and fast and throw
the ball around. Clyde is 5-2
for the year and has suffered
from injuries but are
undefeated in district, 3-0,
having won over
Breckenridge, Merkel and
Jim Ned.

Cardinals at 5-1 after besting Bears
By PAUL GAUDETTE
Staff Writer
The Lingleville Cardinals
varsity football team’s
record is soaring following
their third straight win when
they faced the Gold-Burg
Bears at home Friday.
This 68-22 victory raises
their record to 5-1 for the
season, their best start since
the program was re-
established in 2010.
Friday’s game ended
halfway through the third
quarter when the Cardinals
got a 45-point lead and
enacted the mercy rule.
Leading the scoring once
again was Robert
VanKranenburg who had
171 yards in rushing leading
to three touchdowns. Tucker
Click added two touchdowns,
one in rushing and one in
receiving. Ruperto Huerta
rushed 89 yards and added
another goal for the home
team and Josh Alavardo
also rushed one into the
end-zone. The remaining
touchdown was brought in
by Alex Huerta.
VanKrushedranenburg
also lead the offensive game
with 12 tackles while Click
followed closely behind
with nine.
Lingleville head football
coach Darrell Wallace said
the team played pretty well
offensively but will continue
to work on the fundamentals
in blocking and tackling.
Wallace said it was hard
to fault the team too much
when they’re averaging
nearly 65 points per game,
and they set the competition
under the mercy rule.
The Cardinals will face
Cherokee in an away game
at 7:30 p.m. Friday as a
make-up for the game
against Granbury
Cornerstone that was
cancelled due to a flooded
field.
The Junior High Cardinals
will have a week off after
their 58-32 victory against
Zephyr last week. The Junior
Varsity will be facing the
Houston Academy Panthers
under the Lingleville lights
at 7:30 p.m. Their game was
set later so that Bryan and
May can use the Lingleville
field for their match-up.
