'Freedom of the preaa ia the staff of life
for any vital democracy— Wendell Wilkie
Being Above Suspicion
Important Public Asset
THE DUBLIN PROGRESS, THURSDAY, AUGUST 24.1978 PAGE 4
SUSPICION I* an Intriguing word
probably because there la a flicker of the
unknown bouncing somewhere in aide It.
As a mental act It can be a
more-than-modest advantage In wheeling
and dealing and In even surviving; but Its
boon ends somewhere In the gray flannel
gray making It a dlavantage If coaxed- by
the wrong people.
PUBLIC OFFICIALS, we contend, ahould
make the effort to project themselves to a
plateau high above suspicion by carefully
making themselves good examples and
even going the extra mile to avoid being
placed In a distrustful position. In other
words, they should try to become
fanatically honest with the people who
elected them, placing themselves beyond
distrust. This of course works as an
advantage to both the politician and the
voter, the server and the served. And
that’s the way It should be. This being the
case, re-election would be no problem.
YOU HEAR A LOT about kickbacks,
bribery, and sundry other forms of
“governmental corruption," but there can
be other areas of question, too. Remember
the Duke of Duvall? The case concerning
use of county machinery for personal uses?
Ever hear of Federal elected officials
misusing postage privileges? The various
“little” forms In abundance add up and
cast a shadow over politicians and elected
officials as a whole. A repugnant brew
evolves.
THEREFORE, we urge polltlcans,
especially in this geographic area, to
exhibit caution when considering entering
the gray area where voters might question
ethics. Elected officials, even those beyond
reproach, need to tread softly when
entering an area where they might be
accused of misusing public property or
funds, even if they are not.
IT IS MORE than just a safe way to
survive the political jungle, it Is the only
way to do so for an extended period of
time.
AND AS AN added candle, It helps keep
bad news out of the media-leaving more
room for the more progressive and
productive to be exploited. This, even the
press prefers.

DRIVING FRIENDLY Is a term which
over the years has been Ingrained Into the
skulls of just about every Texan, from
roadslgn message to media-advertising
message, and a good time for rededication
Is now, during the back-to-school period,
since many youngsters will be taking to the
roadways |some for the first time] as the
trek back to the school bouse Is Initiated.
DRIVERS SHOULD of course always
drive carefully, but right now la what might
be termed a more crucial time, especially
near schools, since many youngsters do not
know the rules we adults take for granted
concerning transportation. It Is a good
thing that at most schools signs are erected
In warning of areas where careful driving Is
needed, and speed limits in these areas are
posted for the good of all.
WE URGE drivers to be more cautious
when traveling near students or schools,
this editorial serving as a short reminder.

UTHOUGHT FOR THE WEEKS
When aaked whether George Washington was a soldier
or s sailor, a school boy replied, “He was a soldier. I saw
a picture of Washington crossing the Delaware and any
sailor knows enough not to stand In an rowboat,” While
the boy may have felt the question was an Insult to his
Intelligence, his reply made sense. He reached a proper
conclusion.
This would be a happier world If people always reached
proper conclusions blued on the evidence they aee or
hear. Wrong conclusions are too easily reached too often.
Here Is a good example •
A man was walking on a highway and did not see an
approaching car. The driver blew his horn bnt the man
kept on walking, unaware of the oncoming car. The car
knocked the man down and the brightened driver
Immediately stopped. When the driver saw the man was
unhurt, he condemned the pedestrian harshly. In a
moment’s time however, the driver was ashamed of his
hostile words...The driver discovered the pedestrian was
deaf and obviously could not hear the born.
f . Biting words can often be spoken before we realize the
true circumstances. Is It not best to exercise caution
BEFORE reaching a conclusion • which could be wrong?
