Services for Howard S. Smith,
75, of Sulphur Springs were held
Wednesday, Aug. 24, in the First
Baptist Church of Sulphur Springs,
with the Rev. Darold H. Morgan
and the Rev. Charles A. Redmond
Jr. officiating.
Burial was in Shirley Cemetery
with nephews serving as
pallbearers.
Mr. Smith died early Tuesday
morning at his home following an
extended illness.
He was bom Dec. 12, 1912, in
Hopkins County, the son of Joe V.
and Edith Tatom Smith.
He was a member of First Bap-
tist Church, Sulphur Springs, serv-
ing as deacon and men’s Sunday
School teacher for many years.
In 1936 he was elected as State
Representative from Hopkins
County to the Texas Legislature,
where he served until 1941. Smith
attended the University of Texas
Law School and was admitted to
the Texas Bar in 1939. He con-
tinued to practice law for 48 years
until his death.
His legal career was interrupted
by World War II when he served
with the U.S. Navy, during which
time he was awarded the Silver
Star. During the last two years of
his military service, he served in
the South Pacific as chief legal
officer on the staff of Admiral
Chester W. Nimitz.
He was a charter fellow of the
Texas Bar Foundation and licensed
to practice before the United States
Supreme Court. He had served as
president of the Hopkins County
Bar and was a member pf
numerous Bar associations. In
1982, Mr. Smith was honored by
Northeast Texas Bar Association
for his lengthy and distinguished
legal career.
He was a prominent business
man, a vice president and director
of City National Bank and one of
the founders of Radio Station
KSST.
Survivors include his wife of 52
years, Charles Luckey Smith; one
daughter, Charlotte Smith Mc-
Dowell; two sisters, Mrs. Fay Gil-
ley of Sulphur Springs and Mrs.
Margaret Jo Mills of Mission; and
three grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by one brother,
Ewell Smith of Sulphur Springs
and one sister, Mrs. Edna Johnson
of Miller Grove.

was in charge of arrangements.

Services for L.D. Rhodes, 54, of
1723 Airport Road, were held
Wednesday, Aug. 24, in Tapp Fun-
eral Home Chapel with the Rev.
Danny Stewart officiating.
Burial was in City Cemetery
with J.G. McKee, Jim Weeks, Jack
Seawright, Ken Winkle, Frank Bell
and Robert Ardis serving as
pallbearers.
Mr. Rhodes was bom March 28,
1954, in Hopkins County, the son
of John D. and Catherine Porter-
field Rhodes. He married Dolores
Hale Aug. 10, 1956, in Sulphur
Springs. She survives.
He died Aug. 22 in Hopkins
County Memorial Hospital.
He was the owner of City Marine
Sports and a member of First Chris-
tian Church.
Other survivors include two
sons, Mark Rhodes and Mike
Rhodes both of Sulphur Springs;
one brother, J.D. Rhodes of Hurst;
one sister, Patsy McClain of Sul-
phur Springs; and one grandchild.
Memorials may be made to the
American Cancer Society.

Services for Alex Lowe, 86, of
305 Lamar St., were held Wednes-
day, Aug. 24, in Morning Chapel
Baptist Church with the Rev. Mar-
von H. Wheeler and the Rev.
Cleveland Alexander officiating.
Burial was in Sandfield
Cemetery with deacons of the
Morning Chapel Baptist church
serving as pallbearers.
Mr. Lowe was bom Feb. 14,
1902, in Hopkins County, the son
of John and Charity Nash Lowe.
He married Jeffie Ophelia Ford
Dec. 26, 1924, in Wood county. She
survives.
Mr. Lowe died at 11:35 p.m.
Aug. 21 in Hopkins County
Memorial Hospital.
He was retired custodian from
Houston Elementary School.
He was a member of the Morn-
ing Chapel Baptist Church and
Columbia Masonic Lodge 81.
Other survivors include two
sons, Oliver Eugene Lowe of
Oaklawn, Calif, and Harry James
Lowe of Alberta, Canada; five
daughters, Birdie Dabbs of Sulphur
Springs, Ollie Montgomery of Fort

Washington Baty, 52, of Denton,
formerly of Sulphur Springs, were
held Thursday, Aug. 25, in East
Caney Cemetery with the Rev.
Cleveland Alexander officiating.
She died in Denton following an
extended illness.
Mrs. Baty was bom Jan. 11,
1936, in Hopkins County, the
daughter of Thomas and Willie
Mae Washington.
She was a beautician and a
member of Saint Andrews Holiness
Church in Denton.
Survivors include one son, Ced-
ric Baty of Denton; two daughters,
Roshunda and Christy Baty, both of
Denton; one sister, Wanda parks of
Denton; and three brothers, Spen-
cer, Fred and Thomas Washington,
all of Denton.
Clel K. Godfrey
Services for Clel K. Godfrey, 81,
of 1333 Jefferson St., were held
Thursday, Aug. 25, in Murray-Or-
wosky Chapel with the Rew Don
Tinsley officiating.
Burial was in Fairvicw
Cemetery.
Mr. Godfrey died Wednesday in
Hopkins County Memorial Hospi-
tal.
He was bom July 18, 1907, in
Ridgeway, the son of Charlie and
Zelie Hatton Godfrey.
He was a retired farmer.
Survivors include two sons,
James Godfrey of Sulphur Springs
and Rudy Godfrey of Mesquite;
one sister, Orena Hume of
Needmore Community; eight
grandchildren; seven great-
grandchildren; and one great-great-
granchild.

Services for Tom Bums, 90, of
349 Holly Circle, were held Thurs-
day, Aug. 25, in Lake Highlands
Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe
David Key and the Rev. Earl
Moore officiating.
Burial was in Restlawn
Memorial Park with Homer Brown-
ing, Buford Busby, Robert Robin-
son, Curtis Rhodes, Junior Cofer
and Royce Allen serving as
pallbearers.
Mr. Bums died Tuesday in Hop-
kins County Memorial Hospital.
He was bom Nov. 25, 1897, in
Cowell, Ark., the son of Robert and
Margaret Hendricks Bums. He
married Hazel Lewis Sept. 29.
1928, in Sulphur Springs. She sur-
vives.
Mr. Bums and his wife owned
the laundry in Winnsboro for
several years. He was a veteran of
World War II and a member of
Lake Highlands Baptist Church.
Other survivors include one son,
Robert Bums of Daytona Beach,
Fla.; one daughter, Mrs. Joe Man-
ning of Mount Ida, Ark.; one
brother, William Bums of Clyde;
six grandchildren; and one great-

Graveside services for Ada Mae
Payne, 93, of Pinon Hill, Calif.,
were held Thursday, Aug. 25, in
Rock Springs Cemetery.
Mrs. Payne died Aug. 20 in Vic-
torville, Calif.
She was bom March 9, 1895, in
Waynesboro, Tenn., the daughter of
John and Fannie Griggs Woolley.
She married William McKenley
Payne. He preceded her in death in
1981.
Survivors include two sons, Wil-
liam Payne of Victorville, Calif,
and Donald L. Payne Canoga Park,
Calif.; three daughters, Cleo Patter-
son of Pinon Hill, Calif.; Thelma
Link of Victorville, Calif, and
Wilma J. Slaamod of Pinon Hill; 16
grandchildren; 26 great-
grandchildren; and 24 great-great-
grandchidren.
L.D. Lewis
Services for L.D. Lewis, 80, of
Cumby, were held Friday, Aug. 12,
in the First United Methodist
Church in Cumby with Gene Wel-
bom and Glen Blackmon officiat-
ing.
Burial was in Pleasant Grove
Cemetery with Masonic rites con-
ducted.
Mr. Lewis died Wednesday, Aug.
10, in a Richland Hills Nursing
Home.
He was bom Nov. 4, 1908. in
Hopkins County the son of T.O.
Lewis and Zelpha Morgan Lewis.
He married Nettie Lorcne Moseley
July 8, 1928, in Cumby. She
preceded him in death.
He was a fanner, rancher and a
member of the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include one daughter,
Dorothy Smith of Colleyville; one
brother, E.F. Lewis of Wichita
Falls; one sister, Neva Nell Morris
of Dallas; four grandchildren; and
two great-grandchildren.

He was bom Oct. 31, 1941, in
Independence, Mo., the son of
Clyde Netz and Lillian Atkins Netz.
He was a member of the As-
sembly of God Church and a
veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his parents of
Sulphur Springs; two sons, Jason
Netz of Arkansas and Tony Netz of
Lone Oak; and one sister, Wanda
Green of Sulphur Springs.

Services for Jep G. Stephens Jr.,
72, of Dallas, formerly of Saltillo,
were held Saturday, Aug. 20, in
Tapp Funeral Home Chapel with
the Rev. B.J. Bell and the Rev. L.B.
Morgan officiating.
Burial was in Richland
Cemetery.
He was bom Oct. 12, 1915, in
Saltillo, the son of Jep G. Stephens
Sr. and Emma Ruth Stanford
Stephens. He married Iva Nell
March 1,1943, in San Antonio. She
survives.
He died Thursday at his
residence.
Mr. Stephens was retired from
the U.S. Treasury Department and a
veteran of World War II Army Air
Corp.
Other survivors include two
sons, Tommy Dean Stephens and
David Mark Stephens, both of Aus-
tin; three brothers, Bemon G.
Stephens of Hot Springs, Ark., Bob
Stephens of Arlington and Ben G.

Bartlett, 84, of Avery, formerly of
Paris, were held Sunday, Aug. 21,
in Bright-Holland Funeral Home in
Paris.
Burial was in Meadowbrook
Cemetery in Paris.
Mrs. Bartlett died Thursday in
Saint Joseph Hospital in Paris.
She was bom Aug. 12, 1904, in
Gainesville. She married Dee
Bartlett. He survives.
Other survivors include five
daughters, Patsy Bowman of Sul-
phur Springs, Joan Ruthart of Paris,
Bobbie Stephens of Grand Prairie,
Sue Phillips and Elsie Edmondson,
both of Quinton, Va.; 16
grandchildren; and 21 great-
grandchildren.

(Jim) Bain, 66, of Sulphur Springs,
were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug.
22, in City Cemetery with the Rev.
Bill Ladd officiating.
Mr. Bain died at 7:30 p.m. Aug.
20, in Hopkins County Nursing
Home.
He was bom March 25, 1922, in
Peerless, the son of Henry and
Maggie McCutchens Bain. He mar-
ried Naomi Davis Nov. 16, 1938, in
Hopkins County. She preceded him
in death in 1985.
He was a member of the Baptist
Church and a machinist at Rock-
well Manufacturing Company.
Survivors include one son. Bill
Bain of Sulphur Springs; two
daughters, Netha Hoover of Como
and Pal Ross of Sulphur Springs;
two sisters, Betty Montgomery of
Sulphur Springs and Le trice
Lemoine of Dallas; six
grandchildren; and eight great-
grandchildren.

Services for Huttie Moore, 73, of
Dallas, formerly of Nelta, were
held Saturday, Aug. 20, at
Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home
in Garland.
Burial was in Restland Memorial
Park in Dallas.
Mr. Moore died Wednesday fol-
lowing an extended illness.
He was bom June 22, 1925, in
Nelta, the son of Mr. and Mrs.
George W. Moore. He was a retired
machinist of the Johnny Mitchell
Co. and was a member of
Reinhardt Bible Church.
Survivors include his wife, Net-

Springs fractured her ankle while
visiting in Watertown, N.Y. She had
surgery Wednesday night and can

dian Point Road, Redwood, N.Y.

PRESTON PEUGH, a 10-year-
old from Sulphur Springs, won first
place and $125 in the Aquafest
Bath Tub race, using an inner tube
and a pair of flippers. The half-mile
course was part of the Austin ac-
tivities on Lake Cypress Springs.
Justin, Preston’s older brother,
wasn’t as lucky. His bath tub boat
sank and he had to be resqued by
the Lake Patrol.
BYRON ORANGE Wright of
Sulphur Springs has been awarded
a bachelor’s degree from Northeast
Louisiana University in Monroe,
La. Wright was one of 368 students
who received diplomas during
summer commencement exercises
last week.
BILL HENDERSON’S bull calf,
Fred, was recently named the
Grand Champion Simbrah bull at
the Hunt County Fair’s Open Show
held in Greenville. Kevin Hender-
son showed the Reserve Champion
Simbrah bull, Corky, at the same
show. In addition to these two
trophies, Henderson Ranch won
four first place ribbons, four second
place ribbons, and one third place
ribbon. The ranch, located in
Birthright, is owned by Rickey and
Carol Henderson.
BOBBIE LYNN Gilbreath of
Sulphur Springs has been admitted
to Citizens General Hospital in
Greenville. She is in Room 537 and

Deputy Rick Henson had attended

outstanding recruit for Compa-
ny 55 at the Navy’s Recruit
Training Command in San
Diego, Calif. The 1987 graduate
of Sulphur Springs High School
is the son of Charles and Bob-
bie Askew of Sulphur Springs.
