WEEKLY NEWS.
On Saturday the 6th of January next the publication of a
weekly paper will be commenced by the undersigned enti-
tled Tub Galveston Weekly News devoted lo Politics Lite-
rature Foreign and Domestic Intelligence Commercial Af-
fairs and the General News of the Day.
It will be published in conjunction with the Tri-Weekly
Evening News under the management of R. D. Sebhing Editor
whose entf jo attention shall-be devoted to render the columns
. of the Weekiy News useful and interesting to every class of
readers. A marked degree oirespjct ond-attention shall at all
. times be uanl to the comtrrunications ot exneripnrpn n.:rrvnny-i

co2e as s'ial1 be b?$l calculated to redeem the commercial
chaiaCroi:oUrcountry--to- elevate the character of our na-
tional literature and lo sustain the character of our national
institutions.
In politics the News will be independent pledged to none
open to all; reserving to itself the right to praise or censure the
measures of those who are in power or the pretentions of those
who may aspire to it just aa they may be considered calcula-
ted to result in the good or evil ot ihe country.
In relation lo the measures of the present administration it
is contended that they have not been i he best that could have
been adopted for the interest and welfare of the country and
that those in powe have either through ignorance or willful-
ness trifled with the important trusts reposed in them by the
people. An earnest and unflinching support shall oe given to
the claims of justice of those who it is befeived have been ma-
liciously and deeply injured by the highhanded and .unlawful
proceedings of the present Executive.
A prominent feature in the political principles of the News
will be the advocacy of the expediency and necessity of keep-
ing in repair and in a seaworthy condition the vessels of our
navy while the affairs of Ihe country remain in therr present
unsettled condition. It has been satisfactorily demonstrated
that with our navy we are able to contend successfully with
any force that our enemy can bring against us whereas with-
out a navy we would be entirely at their mercy.
The Literary department of the -News shall n t be found in-
ferior to that of any paper published in the country; a prefer-
ence always being given to original articles and the best en-
deavors of its conductor used to cultivate a liberal taste for the
'literary productions of our own authors.
A portion of each number will be devoted to the publication
of a carelully compiled summary of foi eign and domestic news
always bearing in mind however the fact that matters of a lo-
cal nature are far more interesting to the public than any thing
else the editor will not lose sight of this department and will
endeavor to collect and record such incidents on dits of humor
and general information as will be deemed most interesting and
profitable to the reading community.
Arrangements have already been made to ensure the receipt
of a correct and impartial record of the proceeding of the ap-
proaching Congressrand from the nature of the subjects thet
will engage ihe attention of the honorable body will in all
probability be of the most important and vital interest.
In relation to matters pertaining more especialy to the city
its improvements its morals and rational amusements no ef-
forts shall be spared by its conductor to place the News on
such a footing as to make it a medium through which an a-
mounl of this species of information shall be conveyed to the
public at least equal to that of any of its cotemporaries and in
a shape quite as attracting lo the reader.
Accurate notices of the markets will now and then he given
and a carefully prepared prices current will at all times be
found in the News. A tegular ly corrected Bank Note Table
will also have a place iu its columns.
t Tub 'News will be of medium size printed on fine paper and
shall contain all the news of tne week made np from the Tri
weekly.
The publishers two of whom are practical printers and de-
termined that no pains or labor shall be spared to make the
News in appearance equal and not inferior to any paper
published in the Republic. .

The Rev. C. S. IVES and Lady would respectfully inform tha
citizens of this place and its vicinity that they are now prepared to
receive pupds of both sexes into their insntntion and to instruct them
in all the branches of a substantial and finished education.
From the delightful location and health of Matagorda; from tha
comforts and convenience of a well-bud t town; from a strongdesira
of the people to establish and maintain a high tone of moralfeeling
in the community ; from the laudable observance of the Lord'sday
and regular attendance of the citizens on Divine Service which 13
now held uninterruptedly on every Sunday ; and from there being a
regular Sunday School in town this cannot but be a very desrrabla
place for an msUtution for theeducation of the young.

him as an officer of this institution. I have found Tiim excellently
fitted in all respects to be an instructor of youth. His industry tle-

governor ot the young while his accurate scholarship anduntirihg
zeal render him equally successful as a teacher. In committon? their
children to the instruction of Mr. Ives parents may feel the most
