Wake Up Younger
With Helen Alpert
DON’T FALL FOR FRAUDS! ^
A friend in Florida says you wrote a column about swindlers
who prey on the elderly. You helped her recover $150. Where can I get
a wpy of that column’ -Mrs Henry S./RaBne Wlsc.
There's a Z-Ray machine that expands the atoms in the body.
Costs $50. Is it wertfo it? ^ —Oscar, Teutopolis, IB.
I see that a million pounds of foodstuff was seized by the govern-
ment. Seme was wheat infested by insects. How can we find out what
to avoid? I H&ve 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Texas Grandmcther.
these are some recant letter* that prompt me to Tell All, again!
I’m glad to get these reactions. Pull ap a chair and let’s share
some more straight talk. The Florida column was written for a mag-
azine to show how to protect ourselves from bring bilked out of me
billion dollars a year. In hard cash!
As you know, the tl. 3. Senate Special Committee on Aging with
chairman Sen. Pat McNamara held hearings on fakes, quacks, frauds,
“cures”, liars, cheats, swindlers, thieves and health racketeer*.
Shocking was the revelation that the elderly are the chief victim*
of quacks. Older persons are robbed of one quarter of a million dollars
every year on fake "cures” for arthritis and rheumatism. It’s under-
standable. Desperate hw rebel from pain, folks lose good judge-
ment. Bui what beats me ts 'Why they-fall for so much Junk. No,
Otw-ar; the Z-Ray machine is as worthless as the "Oxydonor” first
lieddlcd in 1892 as an arthritis “cure’’ ... or the “Atomotrone" for
$300 that's barely more than some panes of colored glass and a cou-
ld** of glass jars. They’ve been exposed as outright fakes!
r ‘ FAKE MACHINES- *
There's also the quackery with machines that Claim to restore
“lost manhood” — wipe away wrinkles — develops luscious female
curves—or cure cancer with hocus-pocus light* and soft music. Yes,
we’ve got real miracles in scientific medical instruments, but we've
also got a real new problem. What Is it? Hie miracle machines give
charlatans new bright Ideas for their own fake machines; and make
It easier for the public to believe In them. This statement comes
straight from the Food and Drug Administration!
FAKE VITAMINS
.lust now, eight "gertatlc” vitamins and “mineral capsules” were
seized by the government for false claims. They were thrown off the
market. They lied in claiming they could build muscles, treat unhealthy
gmns and decayed teeth, supply protein, promote long life, slop sinusitis,
tuberculosis, cysts. One su|ier-dooper vitamin waa choked off because
it contains a fond additive considered unsafe. Another — this will pos-
itively rock you! — was a multiple mess of an elixir for kids and
adults claiming to prevent grey hair, (uillng memory, lusterless eyes,
irritability; tied vvltli the lure to promote intelligence, reproductive
enthusiasm, etc.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Don’t fall for frauds! Don't waste your money! Today we’ve got
plenty of solid helps available to everybody! Even Industry is willing-
ly stepping In to stop tin- plunder of the helpless consumer. Yes, Tex-
as Great-Grandmother — the rodent-infested wheat that was confis-
cated was eventually converted into animal feed. Hard steps are be-
ing taken tq 'help everybody Stop, Look and IJsten! What’s the first
thing to do? CHECK FOR TRUTH. Invest a 5-cent stamp on a letter
