Gray hair avauntl I'm in 1113 prime
And will not havo theo coming now
'Tormenting mo before my time"
So leave my brow.
Am I at some odd twenty years
And feeling younger every day
To be disturbed by whitening hairs'?

And then no horrid gray shall mix
"With my beloved cherished hair;

But if I pluck theo more will grow
Ono everyday to say the least:
Gray hair thou art a fearful foe
A hideous beast 1

Education in ouk State. Wo copy tho
following from tho Henderson Flag of tho
Union :
1 t"AVc havo about four hundred and eighty
common schools in tho State. Theso ichools
aro hi cliargo of teachers who arc competent
generally to bestow n knowledge of the initia-
tory branches of practical education. AVo
havo twenty ono high schools and colleges
chartered by our Legislature eight femalo in-
stitutes and thirteen male.' iNine of theso aro
classical in their course and consequently wc
aro not dependent upon our enlightened sister
States for tho accomplishment of our youth."
U2"Tho accounts from Utah say lhat
some of tho Indian Chiefs havo becamo con-
verts to the Mormon religion as regards a
plurality of wives. Ono of them had requir-
ed the Mormons to build him a houso as largo
as Governor Young's and furnish him with as
many wives. They were willing to build tho
houso but declined to let him havo the wives.
This ho considered a gross insult as it impli-
ed that an Indian Chief is not entitled to a
harem as much as a wluto Governor and he
therefore mado it a casus bellit and threaten-
ed to exterminate tho white race. A war is
anticipated which may bo dangerous to tho
overland emigration to California by way of
Independence Mb -
Come to me when thy heart has lost
Its dreams of worldly truth ; '
Come to me when tli3' faded cheek
Proclaims tho flight of youth:
Come to mo then I still hold firm
My early vows of truth.
Come to mo with tho happy smile
You wore when llrt we met;
Come to me will forget the while
That youth's sun of hope is set.
I'll sing thee songs I sang lang sync
And we may be happy yet.
Come to me then at any time
No matter what miy change;
Come to mo from tho fu-oif clime
"Whcro thy frco footsteps range:
Come to me then in this fond heart
Thou ne'er shalt find a change.
2Tho Victoria Advocate says that the
town of Victoria contains two hundred and
ten dwelling-houses and a population of
about sixteen hundred: nino lawyers eight
doctors and ono dentist.
"Among tho religious denominations hav-
ing congiegations and places of woihip in
town aic tho Presbyterians the Methodists
tho Bomau Catholics tho Baptists the Epis-
copalians and the German Lutherens.
There are in town three well conducted Sab-
bath schools. The various places of worship
and tho Sabbath schools aiu usually well at-
tended." Victoria ha also thrco flourishing schools
a Lodgo of Ancient York Masons and also
Of Odd Fellows. Tho Advocate says:
It may bo interesting to our readers to
learn that several important public works aro
in contemplation or in progress for tho bene-
fit of tho town and vicinity. A substantial
bridge is soon to bo erected across the river
here. The town council is preparing to con-
struct a largo and commodious brickduilding
for a college: and tho Catholics aro now en-
gaged in erecting a brick church which when
completed will bo ono of tho finest structures
in Western Texas. Doctor F. E. Hughes
and Mr. Arcnablearo building a large expens-
ive and powerful steam saw and grist mill on
tho river about two miles below tho town
tract. From these facts our readers will sec
that Victoria though seldom boasted of as
one of tho fast towns is steadily and gradually
progressing and is likely to keep pace in all
substantial and useful improvements with
her sister towns and with tho surrounding
country.
Why do Teeth Decay? All the theories
that time and again havo been advanced in
answer to this inquiry havo longo since vanish-
ed before tho true doctrine of the action of
external corrosive agents. The great and all-
powerful destroyer of tho human teeth is acid
vegetable or mineral; and it matters not
whether that acid is formed in tho mouth by
the decomposition of particles of food left be-
tween and around tho lecth orjyhcthcr it is
applied directly to tho organs themselves the
result is the same tho enamel is dissolved
corroded and the tooth destroyed. Much
very much of the decaj in teeth may bo at-
tributed to the corrosive effects of acetic acid
which is not only in common use as a condi
ment In the form of vinegar but it is generat-
ed by the decay and decomposition ofany and
consider how very few nervous comparative
ly take especial pains to remove every parti-
cle of food from between" and around their
teeth iimuediatel after eating can wc won-
der that diseased teeth are so common and
that their early loss is so frequently deplored.
