Notes from the
Old Fashioned
Gospel Singing
By Harvey Lester
(St. Louis, Missouri)
Hi everyone! It's nice to be back
on the job after a brief vacation and
I’ll try to bring you up to date on
some of the activities of the Old
Fashioned Gospel Singing. This has
been a very busy year at the Old
Fashioned Gospel Singing and the
Kingsland Theatre. In addition to our
regular fourth Saturday night and
Sunday afternoon singings, we have
had some special singings in between;
also some revival meetings. Johnny
Rion of Radio Station KSTL had a
good revival from March 10th to
March 17th.
On Saturday night, March 17th we
had the Weatherford Quartet of Ak-
ron, Ohio in a big special singing and
I know the folks in St. Louis will
long remember that night. The bless-
ings of the Lord were surely there
in a wonderful way.
On our regular fourth Saturday
night singing—which was March 24th
—and Sunday afternoon March 25th
we had two good quartets with us:
The Royal Sons Quartet of East Al-
ton, Illinois and The Melody Makers
Quartet of St. Louis, Missouri. Of
course the Lester Family and Band
of Radio Station KSTL were on hand
to help out.
This brings us up to April and our
Old Fashioned Gospel Singing rolling
along in high gear. Saturday night,
April 28th and Sunday afternoon, the
29th we had another boost up the lad-
der with the famous Blue Ridge Quar-
tet from Spartanburg, South Carolina.
These boys have been favorites in St.
Louis for many years, and at the
Old Fashioned Gospel Singing the
folks are always anxious to know
when they are coming back.
May 26th and 27th we had the
Page (6)
Prophets Quartet from Knoxville,
Tennessee. These boys always do a
good job of gospel singing.
Thursday night, June 7th we had
a big special singing with the fam-
ous Speer Family of Nashville, Har-
vesters Quartet of Charlotte, North
Carolina; and the Lester Family and
Band and Johnny Rion, all of Radio
Station KSTL. Friday night, June 8th
the Boy Scouts used our Theatre for
their big spring program. June 23
and 24 was our next big singing,
featuring the Oak Ridge Quartet of
Nashville.
June 29th the Lester Family—Her-
schel, Alene, Donna, Brian, Ginger,
and Mrs. Lester and myself—and
most of our Band and their families
boarded our bus and started on our
vacation. Our first stop was in Bridg-
man, Michigan on Saturday night,
June 30, where we had a fine pro-
gram at the Sawyer Baptist Church.
Sunday, June 1st we had another won-
derful program in the Congregational
Church. That night we attended a
camp meeting just out of Bridgman;
came back to our motel and packed
our bus and were ready to resume our
journey. We did not have another
appointment until Saturday night,
July 14th and this was in Chicago.
So early the next morning we climbed
aboard our bus and started for De-
troit. We arrived there about noon, re-
freshed ourselves, fueled up the old
bus, crossed the river into Canada,
and we were on our way to Niagara
Falls. We enjoyed our stay there very
much. After a few days, we came
back into the United States, went a-
round the Eastern seaboard by way
of Albany, New York, down to New
York City and spent a few days there.
All of the folks had a wonderful
time, and the kids especially enjoyed
New York. From there we journeyed
over to Washington D. C. and spent
a few days, then on to Chicago where
we had a wonderful program at the
big State Convention of the Church
of God of Prophecy on July 14. We
left Chicago at midnight and arrived
back in St. Louis at 6 a.m. July 15.
Time and space will not permit us
telling of all the nice things we saw
and the wonderful time we had on
our vacation.
This brings us up to our next regu-
lar fourth Saturday night and Sun-
day afternoon singing, which was July
28 and 29. We had with us our old
friend and neighbor Barney Barrow
and the Victory Quartet of Granite
City, Illinois; the Tolbert. Sisters of
Sikeston, Missouri; the Gospel Four
Quartet from Roxana, Illinois and the
Lester Family and Band. Sunday af-
ternoon we had a big surprise. The
famous Blue Ridge Quartet of Spar-
tanburg, South Carolina was passing
through St. Louis and dropped by the
Old Fashioned Gospel Singing and
August, 1962
did some numbers for us. We are
grateful to them for this visit.
I will try to make my regular mon-
thly report from now on. I enjoy
reading about the gospel singings in
the STAMPS QUARTER NEWS. I
hope Fve not taken up too much space
with this report.

The Road Ahead
By Doug Jones
We are beginning to see a new spir-
it of revival in gospel singing all over
the country. More people are attend-
ing singing conventions and quartet
concerts than ever before. Young peo-
ple are singing with much enthusiasm
and this is always a good sign of in-
terest. Many people are writing me
concerning a singing school in their
churches and communities, and we be-
lieve we will be busy for the next few
years teaching gospel music schools.
For your information, I teach all
phases of gospel music; music theory,
harmony and composition, and private
lessons in voice. I also train choirs,
choir directors, evangelistic directors,
and quartet training. If my services
are needed in your community or in
your church, please let me know.
We had a wonderful school in Fay-
etteville, Arkansas, and just closed a
three-week school in Fort Smith, Ar-
kansas. Both of these schools were
well attended and the interest was
very good. We are looking forward to
going back to these places next year.
May all of us who are interested in
the welfare of gospel singing work
together for the sole purpose of mak-
ing gospel singing better than ever
before all over the nation.
I believe in giving the flowers to
those who deserve them while they
are living and I wish to say that men
like Frank Stamps and has associates
have done a wonderful work in the
gospel singing profession for many
years. Millions of gospel song books
have been published, thousands have
attended the Stamps Gospel Music
Schools, and the good that has been
done will go on forever as a result of
Mr. Stamps’ work. No one will ever
know just how much good your life
has done, Mr. Stamps, until the roll
is called up yonder and the crowns are
given. Your singing and your teach-
ing throughout the years has certain-
ly not been in vain, Mr. Stamps. You
have some good years ahead and we
believe you will continue to put the
interest of gospel singing first in your
life. We all admire and respect you
for what you have done and for what
you are doing. “Keep On Keeping
On.”
