Texas Tech Raiders Enter Full
SWC Competition In Basketball
Texas Tech’s basketball sea* \ ger and 6-8 Don Perkins of Ir-
son record is 9-4, and the Red
Raiders are 9-4 in the battle for
the rebounds. That figure is a
bit mis-leading. however. West
Texas State out-rebounded Tech
42-40, but Tech triumphed 95-
73. Georgia Tech held a 40-33
margin on the boards, losing to
the Raiders in the score 67-64.
On the other hand. Tech gained
the more rebounds, 41-40. in its
71-67 loss to Arkansas in the
pre-reason tournament and pull-
ed down 38 to 35 for Southern
Methodist in the Mustangs’ con-
ference win over the Raiders. 84-
80.
All in all. Coach Polk Robison
has been gratified by the re-
bounding of the Raiders, whose
tallest regular is Leon (Podd)
Hill of Sudan, a shade under
6-6. Tech, in its first two con-
ference games, however, got a
lot of help on the boards from
a big man who isn’t there now,
Pat Noakes of Fort Worth, 6-9
sophomore reserve. After gain-
ing top rebounding honors in
the wins over Rice and Texas
Christian, Noakes was sidelined
with a broken ankle in the lat-
ter contest. He may get back in
about five weeks.
Tech was to have some exper-
ienced big men this season,
but in successive spring semes-
ters two 6-8 men withdrew, for
financial and scholastic reasons,
to enter the service.
Help is in sight for next year,
though. Tech’s freshmen boast

ving. They're pacing Gene Gib-
! son’s Picadors to a 6-1 record go-
ing into Saturday night's clash
with the lnce Oilers, headed by
ex-Raider Carl lnce.
Hudgens, after a slow start, is
averaging 21.6 a game: Perkins,
13.7. Hudgens* best nights have
been against the Wayland Fresh,
; men, 30 points, and Hardin-
| Simmons, 24 points and 25 re-
bounds. Perkins had 17 against
Wayland and Hardin-Simmons.
The Picadors’ only loss came
in a return match with West
Texas at Canyon. 67-65. Hudgens
1 had 13 rebounds and 19 points
before fouling out with 14 min-
utes to play. It was his first time
to foul out.
Grades permitting, for the
next two seasons Robison could
call on a front line of 6-9 Hud-
gens. 6-9 Noakes. and 6-8 Per-
kins.

Man Confesses Robbing
Houston Supermarket
HOUSTON, Tex. (UP).—A 33
year old Houston man has ad-
mitted that he and two others
robbed Randall’s Supermarket
of $10,000 last night. However,
the suspect, Edw'ard Barnett
Cox, a tugboat deckhand refuses
to name the other men. The
three men forced two women
employees of the grocery market
to pile $10,000 into a canvass
bag and fled in a car. Police ar-
rested Cox in a tavern after a
tip from someone who got the
license number.
Lightweight Champion Joe
Brown is a solid (1-3) favorite
tomorrow night in what figures
to be just a “stay in shape”
bout. Brown, with 93 fights un-
der his belt, takes on Ernie
“Sonny Boys” Williams who
goes to the post for only the
24th time.
Just add the name of B o b
Cousy to the list of all time
scoring greats in pro basketball.
The backcourt star for Boston
last night joined George Mikan
—Ed MacAuley and Adolph
Schayes in the 10,000-point
scoring bracket. Cousy scored
18 points as Boston beat Minne-
apolis, 92-87. Cousy now has 10.-
012 points. Schayes, still active
with Syrauce, leads with 11,911
points. Mikan, now retired, has
11,764. MacAuley with St. Louis
is third with 10.813 points.

Tech’s weakest night from the
free throw line came at Fayette-
! ville. The Raiders made only
five of 10 tries, the same ac-
curacy mark of the Arkansas
, Razorb^cks, who made good on
I six of 12 attempts. Arkansas al-
1 so made one more field goal and
won 58-55.
Because Tech’s student body
will be between semesters. Tech
officials aren’t afraid to adver-
tise that general admission tic-
kets will be available at the en-
trance to Lubbock Coliseum Sat-
urday night when Tech meets
Baylor. Between 2 and 4.000
fans were turned away from the
SMU contest, which seated (and
stood) about 10,200.
Bobby Wilhoite and Bill Tew-
cs shared top scoring honors
with 14 points each while Loyd
Mynatt followed closely with 13,
and George Watson had 9.
The Lions field goal average
was better than in the last three
games with 17 out of 50 for 34
per cent average and hit 17 out
of 29 free throws for a 59 per
cent average.
Wilhoite had the best average
from the field with four out of
eight, 50 per cent average,
Tewes hit four out of ten for
a 40 per cent average. Tewes
led in free throws with six of
seven for 86 average. Wilhoite
hit six of ten for 60 per cent
average.
Franklin went into consolation
by (he defeat but decided to
drop from the tournament after
the shellacking they took in
their opening game.
The Lions will journey to Cor-
sicana tonight to take on the
Tigers in a district game.
Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. the
Lions will go back to Hubbard
where they will face Valley
Mills, who whipped Penelope
Wednesday night. If they lose
out Friday it will eliminate them
from the tournament, but a win
will put them in the semi-finals
against the winner of the God-
ley-Waco Catholic Saturday af-
ternoon.
Monday Bardwell will invade
Ennis for the March of Dimes
benefit game which will get un-
derway at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday the Lions will go to
Athens for another District
clash.

One Man Believed Drowned
In Flooding Trinity River
HOUSTON, Tex. (UP).—A
small fishing boat capsized last
night and two Houston men
were tossed into the flooding
Trinity River between Anuhuac
and Liberty. One of the men,
35-year-old Vernon Nash, is be-
lieved to have drowned. His
companion, 30-year-old Delbert
Greer, managed to swim to
shore and was picked up today
by a tugboat. Greer suffers from
shock and exposure. He is in an
Anahuac hospital. Greer said he
did not see any sign of Nash
after their boat overturned.
Seven or eight boats are search-
ing the Trinity for a sign of
Nash.
