Brahmarettes advance to state
Brahmas make regional finals for first time in 10 years

It’s been a great year for
East Bernard High School’s
athletic teams, and even
though graduation is this
week, it’s not over yet.
The Brahmarettes softball
team has advanced to the
state tournament for the first
time since 2008, when they
were state champions.
Meanwhile, the Brahmas
baseball team will make their
first appearance in the region-
al finals since 2004.
And, oh yeah, East Ber-
nard’s graduation ceremony is
at 8 p.m. Friday at Memorial
Stadium.
The state softball tourna-
ment is set for Wednesday
and Thursday, while the re-
gional finals baseball playoff
series will be Thursday and
Saturday
The No. 3 state-ranked
Brahmarettes defeated the
No. 4 team, Natalia, in a one-
game playoff, 7-1, on Friday
night to advance to the Class
2A state tournament.
East Bernard, 25-11 on the
season, faced Hawley, unde-
feated at 35-0, on Wednesday
afternoon at Red and Char-
line McCombs Field on the
University of Texas campus
in Austin. That game was
played after the East Bernard
Express went to press.
In the other semifinal
game, Crawford (33-1-1) faced
Lone Star (28-5) on Wednes-
day evening.
The two winners will ad-
vance to the state champi-

Graduation
set for Friday
East Bernard High School’s seniors will
see their 12-plus years of hard work come
to an end this week at their graduation cer-
emony
On the east side of Wharton County,
EBHS students will be the first to graduate.
Wharton and Boling students will have their
ceremonies on June 6.
The East Bernard High School Class of
2014 will be led by valedictorian Justin Mc-
Guire and salutatorian Ashly Heimdal.
The ceremony begins at 8 p.m. Friday at
Memorial Stadium.

the Wharton County Youth Fair.
East Bernard Top Graduates
Justin McGuire
East Bernard valedictorian
Justin McGuire, son of Steve and
Carolyn McGuire, is East Bernard
High School’s Valedictorian this year.
He has a grade point average of 4.2.
Justin has been a member of var-
sity football for three years, varsity
baseball for four years and varsity
basketball for two years.
He has participated in UIL Aca-
demic contest for four years in Cur-
rent Events and Science.
Other school activities include be-
ing in the National Honor Society for
two years, serving as its president in
the 2013-2014 school year. He is also
a member of Fellowship of Christian
Athletes.
His interests include hunting and
sports.
Outside of school, Justin has been
an altar server for eight years at
Holy Cross Catholic Church and a
member of KJT No. 40 for 10 years.
He plans to attend Texas A&M Uni-
versity this fall and get his degree
through the Dwight Look College of
Engineering.
Ashly Heimdal
East Bernard salutatorian
Ashly Heimdal, daughter of
Mylan and Ana Heimdal, is this
year’s East Bernard High School
Salutatorian. She has a grade point
average of 4.15.
Ashly has been a member of the
EBHS Brahma Band for six years.
She has participated in UIL Aca-
demic contest for the past four years,
in Number Sense for four years and
One-Act Play for three years.
Her interests include reading
manga, storyboarding, crocheting and
playing the flute and bassoon.
She plans to attend Blinn Junior
College for two years, taking her core
classes and being part of the school’s
band. There she hopes to befriend
voice actors for future animation proj-
ects.
Ashly wishes to attend Sam Hous-
ton State University for two years and
major in two-dimension studio art and
minor in secondary education.
Her goal is to become an art teach-
er and do freelance animations in her
spare time.
