Members of East Bernard's American Legion Post No. 226 stand at ease as ceremonies are held on Memorial Day to pay tribute to those
who gave their lives in all of America's wars to protect the freedoms enjoyed by residents of this country.
Residents turn out to honor war dead
Special to the East Bernard Express
Local citizens gathered on
Memorial Day to remember
American soldiers who died in
battle.
The annual ceremony was
held at 9 a.m. at Holy Cross
Cemetery and conducted by
American Legion Post No.
226 and Rev. Don Ruppert,
pastor of Holy Cross Catholic
Church.
Rev. Ruppert opened by
welcoming the group gath-
ered and briefly explained the
origin and purpose of Memo-
rial Day.
He said the first national
ceremony called Decoration
Day was held in 1868 at Ar-
lington National Cemetery in
Virginia.
Prayers were recited for
those men, both Union and
Confederate, who had been
killed in the Civil War.
After speeches, children
from the Soldier’s and Sailor’s
Orphan Home and mem-
bers of the Grand Army of
the Republic made their way
through the cemetery, strew-
ing flowers on both Union and
Confederate graves, reciting
prayers and singing hymns.
Robert Hlavinka led the
memorial tribute on behalf of
East Bernard American Le-
gion Post No. 226.
The National Anthem was
followed by a 21-gun salute
and the playing of Taps.
Rev. Ruppert closed with
a prayer for those men and
women presently serving in
the military, for their families
and their safe return home.
Approximately 175 people
attended the ceremony.
Youth from the First Unit-
ed Methodist Church provid-
ed a patriotic floral arrange-
ment to honor the veterans
who died defending the free-
doms held so dear.
Holy Cross Cemetery Com-
mittee members placed a flag
on the graves of all the veter-
ans.
