FYJ Change Order Approved
Elementary School Campus Going Through Final Construction Phases
By Dustin Wright
Sentinel Managing Editor
As last minute work and punchlist
items are being addressed at the F. J.
Young Elementary School campus,
Trustees with the Seminole Indepen-
dent School District Board approved
of funding the work associated with
code upgrades to the original portion
of the educational campus, in action
taken Monday evening.
In a unanimous 6-0 vote Monday
evening, SISD Trustees approved of
a the transfer of $263,000 in funds
from the district's bond budget to
cover costs associated with the
upgrades, which involved issues
related to electrical, mechanical, gas
and plumbing in the oldest part of
the FJY building, located in the 2100
block of S.W. Ave. B.
"They were issues that had to be
addressed, or the inspectors would
not allow for us to come back into
the building," said Doug Harriman,
Superintendent of Schools for SISD,
in Mondays meeting, prior to the
unanimous vote by Trustees.
The FJY campus is in the final
stages of a $9.6 million addition/
overhaul project, which will see
the addition of 14 new classrooms
— totaling over 15,000 sq ft in
space -- the addition of an 11,000
sq ft gymnasium facility, as well as
infrastructure upgrades, and interior
renovations to the original portions
of the school building.
In addition, the facility will also
receive a new fire alarm/sprinkler
system and added security fea-
tures -- such as time locked doois
- throughout the campus.
Nick Hines, an architect with
Parkhill, Smith and Cooper, Inc.,
- the architecture firm overseeing
the development of Seminole ISD's
$110 million bond project - of which
the FJY work is being conducted
- anticipates work at the campus to
be completed by Dec. 20.
"At this point in time, we are going
through and identifying punchlist
items to be addressed so we can fin-
ish this campus out and turn it back
over to (Seminole ISD)," said Hines
in Mondays meeting.
Harriman stated SISD officials
don't plan on re-occupying the cam-
pus - home to the school district's
pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and
first grade students - until 'late Janu-
ary or early February.'
’ We aren't in any rush to make the
move back over to (FJY)/ said Har-
riman. 'We want to make sure that
campus is completely ready for us
when we do make that move, and
that we are completely satisfied with
the project before we jump in there.
