ohnston's message:
to never give up
Wharton County Unit of
Texas Retired Teachers As-
sociation met Nov. 6 at First
United Methodist Church
Fellowship Hall in East Ber-
nard. President Jim Murrile
of East Bernard presided at
the meeting. Kathy Kofron of
El Campo was welcomed as a
guest.
Peter Johnston of East
Bernard, a self-employed con-
sultant and researcher in law
and public policy, spoke on the
subject Never Give Up and
cited biographies of several
historical people.
Murrile gave information
on the last District III meet-
ing in Beeville.
He reported that the Teach-
er Retirement System trust
fund value is $118.3 billion.
TRS investments earned
a return rate of 8.6 percent,
resulting in the fact that the
fund is “actuarially sound.”
Murrile encouraged Each
One, Bring One in an attempt
to gain new members. Those
securing new members would
be entered into a drawing at
the state convention in April.
In her legislative report, Tish
McAlister of El Campo also
stressed the importance of
numbers in order to continue
to safeguard the defined bene-
fits that retirees have earned.
She reminded the members
to send thank-you letters to
State Rep. Phil Stephenson
for his work on the pension
committee.
Secretary Dana Riley of
Wharton and treasurer Don-
ald Lorfing of East Bernard
gave their reports. Additional
reports were these: Volunteer
Services, Marie Hrncir of El
Campo; Health Care, Dottie
Collins of El Campo; Walk A
Million Steps, Jeannette Ma-
cha of El Campo; and Mem-
bership, Lorfing.
Scholarship Committee
chairman Mary Ellen Martin
of El Campo and the commit-
tee continue to clarify criteria
for the annual scholarships
given by the club.
TRTA Foundation chair-
man, Carol Labay of El Cam-
po, told of scholarship money
available to teachers.
Members brought chil-
dren’s books to the meeting
as part of the TRTA Literacy
initiative. The books will be
distributed in the county.
The next meeting of WC-
TRTA will be Wednesday,
Jan. 15, in the El Campo Civic
Center.
