Continued from Page 1
Early voters do not need to vote in a
specific precinct as those who wait until
general election day.
Early voting locations include:
• Wharton Civic Center, 1924 N. Ful-
ton in Wharton.
• El Campo Fire and EMS Station,
220 N. Merchant in El Campo.
Early voting times will be 8 a.m. to 5

day, Oct. 31. Voting will continue Thurs-
day, Nov. 1 and Friday, Nov. 2 from 7 a.m.
to 7 p.m.
“Early voting will all be done through
electronic ballot,” Wessels said.
Instructions for using the electronic
machines can be found on the county’s
website, www.co.wharton.tx.us, by click-
ing the electronic voting tab.
To cast ballots, “Voters need to bring
their voter registration card or some oth-
er form of valid identification,” Wessels
said. “An example would be a passport or
utility bill.
On the Wharton County ballot will be
three local contested races.
For state representative District 85,
Wharton County resident Republican
Phil Stephenson will face Fort Bend
County resident Democrat Dora Olivo.
She was unopposed in the Democratic
Primary.
Stephenson won the May Republican
Primary beating Lee Duggan of Sugar
Land.
In the race for Congressional District
27, Republican Blake Fahrenthold is run-
ning against Democrat Rose Meza Har-
rision. Fahrenthold won the Republican
nomination by beating John Grunwald,
Don A1 Middlebrook and Trey Roberts in
the May Primary election. Harrison was
chosen for the Democratic ticket over
challengers Murphy Junaid, Ronnie C.
McDonald and Jerry J. Trevino.
In addition, there will also be two
other candidates on the ballot for U.S.
Representative — Liberterian candidate
Corrie Byrd and independent candidate
Bret Baldwin.
Wharton County Sheriff Republican
incumbent Jess Howell is running for a
sixth term. He is challenged by Wharton
County resident Phil Rehak running on
the Democratic ticket.
State Senate District 18 is held by Re-
publican Glenn Hegar. He is currently
unopposed in his campaign.
To cast ballots, ‘Voters need to bring
their voter registration card or some oth-
er form of valid identification,” Wessels
said. “An example would be a passport or
utility bill.”

tion:

fication card;

taining the person’s photograph;

by name from a governmental entity;
• A copy of a current utility bill, bank
statement, government check, paycheck,
or other government document that

or any other form of identification pre-
scribed by the Secretary of State.
The November general election will be
from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Voters did not have to vote in the May
29 primary election in order to vote in the
general election.

— Relay for Life to be held Saturday in Wharton

by a caregivers’ walk and then
the introduction of teams. Af-
ter that, team members begin
the walk, which will not end
until 12 hours later. The only
time the walking stops is for
the lighting of the luminaries,
a special ceremony that hon-
ors those who lost their lives
to the disease.
There are 26 teams signed
up for this year’s event, rep-
resenting 530 individuals.
Kachmar said around $50,000
has been raised so far through
corporate sponsorships, team
fundraising, luminary sales
and the registration fee.
Kachmar said that of the
total funds collected, some 45
percent stays in the south-
east Texas area, earmarked
for such things as providing
wigs and turbans for patients,
covering travel expenses for
treatment, and going to M.D.
Anderson’s research efforts.
“You’re helping your own
community,” she said of the
relay.
While the walkers are on
the track, other team mem-
bers and visitors will spend
time at campsites set up on
the field. Friendly competi-
tions, music and activities are
all held to create a more fes-
tive atmosphere. Despite the
relay’s sobering subject mat-
ter, Kachmar believes it’s im-
portant to draw attention to
the common bond — the posi-
tive connection — that exists
between friends, family and
total strangers.
“I wish I could get every-
body to come and spend 15
minutes out there. The friend-
ship and love you feel out
there is incredible,” Kachmar
said. ‘We’re not in competi-
tion. We’re all on the same
team.”
She is particularly keen of
such a bond, being a cancer
