Reception Held For Glasgow
CLIFTON — State Senator Bob
Glasgow, in Clifton Oct. 18 for a recep-
tion in his honor, lashed out at Repub-
lican opponent Jane Nelson for what
he called "gross distortions of the
facts” during the campaign for the
District 22 State Senate seat
Glasgow, a Democrat from Stephen
ville who has held the seat since 1981,
was featured guest at an informal ral-
ly in Clifton City Park. The event was
sponsored by the Boeque County
Democratic Club.
The gathering drew a large au
dience that included U.S. Congress
man Chet Edwards and a number of
city and county officials and office
seekers
“If the things she (Mrs Nelson'
claims are true, why is it that I have
the endorsement of all local police and
prosecutors associations, and virtual
ly everybody else?" said Glasgow
"My opponent is a member of the
State Board of Education, and she
doesn't even have the (endorsement
of) the educational associations.”
Glasgow charged Nelson with at
tempting to mislead voters by portray
ing him as soft on crime and in favor
of a state income tax.
“Jane Nelson has been playing a
tape that is supposed to show I got
James Cross, a convicted murderer,
paroled," said Glasgow.
“The facts are that he (Cross) was
allowed to attend his father's funeral
in Fort Worth, accompanied by two
armed guards. Then earlier this year
he was released from prison, with ab-
solutely no involvement on my part,
because he had served his entire sen
tenet There was no parole involved.
Now she's even claiming I represent
ed Cross at his trial. How could I?
When that happened I was a junior at
Tarleton."
Glasgow cited other instances of dis-
tortion, including Nelson’s claim that
he favors a state income tax, and
called on his opponent to stick to the
facts, and to the issues and qualifi
cations
Glasgow was introdued by U.S. Con-
gressman Chet Edwards, a colleague
of Glasgow's in the State Senate pri-
or to his election to the House.
Edwards praised Glasgow as one of
the strongest and most effective mem-
bers of the Senate. He recalled the
time last year when the Lake Bosque
project was on the docket for final ac-
tion by the Texas Water Development
Commission.
"The project was dead until Bob
Glasgow—acting at the request of lo-
cal officials in Bosque County-lent
his support,” Edwards told the gather-
ing "You have the best represents
tion you can possibly have in Bob
Glasgow."
“Bob Glasgow doesn’t spend time
bragging about the things he does for
his counties,” Edwards concluded,
"but he does a lot The Lake Boeque
project ia an example of how he
represents the rural voice. You won’t
get that kind of representation from
someone who lives in the suburbs of
Dallas.”
It was noted that Glasgow is one of
the few remaining senators who re-
sides in a rural community. Nelson
lives in the suburban Dallas area of
Denton County. Glasgow has received
the editorial endorsement of the Den-
ton Record-Chronicle, the largest
newspaper in Denton County.

MERIDIAN — City Council mem-
'bers thought that they had conclud
ed handling a municipal insurance
matter for another year after a spe
cial called meeting Oct. 19. However,
this appears not to be so.
Voting 3-2, the council agreed to
award a one-year $14,208 contract to
Bosque Insurance Agency, Meridian,
for liability, property, and automotive
insurance. Exclusions included pub
lie officials and flood damage
coverage.
The council decided to give The
Avirett Agency, Meridian, a year’s
contract for flood insurance at $401.
The present insurance covering pub-
lic officials will not expire until March
1, 1993, so it was not a factor.
City Secretary Marie Garland said
that The Avirett Agency has since ad-
vised the city that it does not wish to
carry flood insurance only. As a
result, a second special called meet
ing was scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday,
Oct. 27, to reconsider the matter.
Favoring the council’s previous ac-
tion were Councilmen Rod Brasfield,
Todd Hyatt, and Billy Kibler. Voting
in opposition were Councilmen Tom
Arthur and Mervin (Fuzz) Spitzer.
The bids had been taken under ad
virement Oct. 12 Also submitting a
bid was the Texas Municipal League,
Austin.
