THE CLIFTON RECORD, WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 1988, PAGE 5A

meeting.
Once the new council was in
place, Alderman Paul Holling-
sworth was elected by acclamation
to serve as Mayor Pro Tem.
Clifton Police Chief Jim Van-
derhoof then introduced Randall
Todd Hill, a candidate for police
officer, to the council. Hill, a native
Cliftonite, is age 25, a 1980 Clifton
High School graduate, and is a Lake
Whitney resident who was recent-
ly elected to serve an unexpired
term on the Morgan Independent
School District Board of Trustees.
Vanderhoof said that Hill
received an Associate of Applied
Science degree from MCC in law en-
forcement and is a graduate of the
Tarleton State University Law En-
forcement Academy.
The chief explained that although
Hill’s legal residence is Cedar
Shores Estates near Lake Whitney,
the police officer applicant spends
most of his time in Clifton. He has
been working as a substitute mail
carrier for Star Route 1, Clifton.
Following the chiefs presentation
and questioning of Hill by aider-
men, the council gave Vanderhoof
the nod to hire Hill as an officer,
subject to official confirmation at
the next regular city council
meeting.
In other business, the council
opened bids on surplus property and
made awards to high bidders as fol-
lows: 1980 Ford Fairmont to Wade
Cox, Clifton, for $140; 1969 Chevro-
let pickup to Don Terrell, Clifton,
for $110; 1968 Kyser Jeep to Don
Terrell for $400.
A lone bid of $15 for three large
scales from the Santa Fe Depot was
rejected.
It was noted that no bids were
received on several items of surplus
equipment, so these will be adver-
tised for sale in the Texas Municipal
League magazine, to perhaps at-
tract an audience targeted moreso '
at those involved in city
government.
During general discussion period,
Mayor Westley reported on his re-
cent meeting with County Commis-
sioners regarding the possibility of
establishing a countywide landfill,
and some discussion was aired
regarding the upcoming June 7
hearings in Austin pertaining to
permits for the construction of Lake
Bosque. It was decided that the city
will sponsor at least one chartered
bus to the hearing, so residents in
favor of the lake are encouraged to
make plans to attend. Persons are
asked to call City Hall after May 23
to reserve seats on the bus.
In other discussion, Mayor1 West-
ley informed the council that Ewell
Scarlett had resigned as a member
of the Housing Authority Board and
that names of a potential replace-
ment should be brought to the next
city council meeting.
Alderman Mary Sue Crawson
gave a short report to the council
about progress being made toward
this year’s 4th of July Picnic in the
Park celebration. She said that a
concrete slab on which a gazebo will
someday sit was poured on Monday
and that plans for the event are be-
ing completed.
