"nvcstigation of “cold cases"
- a is nothing new. In 1939, Polk
-. A County officers kept alive a
130-year search for an accused wife
flayer.
If C.N. “Charlie” McFall thought
•that the passing of 30 years dulled
• the memory of a crime he was
Charged with one July day, he was
j'mistaken. If haunting thoughts of
‘’his past failed to keep away slum-
ber, surely the knowledge that the
'law was still seeking justice caused
'him sleepless nights.
Every sheriff and every deputy
kept alive a grim promise to get
pMcFall someday.
[ Sheriff L.D. Kimball and his de-
partment took renewed interest in
the case in 1939, offering a cash re-
ba! ward of $250 for the arrest and con-
aJiviction of Charlie McFall for the
murder of his wife on the third day
of July in the year 1910. Governor
O’Daniel asked that (he amount of
the reward be increased and helped
to secure the ajd of the FBI. Chief
G-man J. Edgar Hoover promised
the active cooperation of his de-
partment in clearing this, possibly
the most outstanding, unfinished
case in Polk County records.
C.N. McFall left Wayne County,
Tenn. around 1908 with a charge
of assault with attempt to murder
hanging over his head. Eluding
arrest, he came to pplk County,
where he became a fiinbef grader.
He met and later matTied'Miss Es-
ther Parrish and they established a
home at Bering. ; .
On the night of July 2, 1910, Mc-
Fall spent the night in Livingston at
the old Pine Lodge near the depot.
He caught the morning train for
Bering on July 3. He was known to
have been drinking heavily.
Officers were told that after he
arrived in Bering, an argument en-
sued and McFall's mother-in-law,
Mrs. Arthur Parrish, was shot with
a shotgun, her arm being complete-
ly blown off. His wife, Esther, was
then beaten to death with a ham-
mer. Some men who worked at the
Bering Mill saw McFall enter a
cane break near the scene, still car-
rying the gun and the hammer.
S.C. Chapman was sheriff at the
time and used bloodhounds, but
no trace df the fugitive was found.
The gun and hammer were found
' by Wash Smith in the cane breaks
about six months after the murder.
Mrs. Arthur Parrish, who was
wounded by the shotgun, also died
not long after.
Charlie. McFall .was never
found.
