Extension Service, Conservatory Teaches Communication Skills To MHS Students
MERIDIAN Because of
today's media technologies,
communication through body
language has broken down.
With this in mind, the Bosque
County Extension Service and
the Bosque Conservatory re-
cently teamed up to instruct
ninth-graders from Meridian
High School in the art of ver
bal and nonverbal communica-
tion.
Extension Service Program
Assistant Donna Stevens as-
sisted in providing speakers
and materials. Subjects in
eluded personal relations in
friendships, meeting the pub
lie, interviews, sports, college
and career life.
Ken Patterson, former pro-
fessional baseball player, errv
phasized the importance of
body language at meetings, ei-
ther in private with individuals
or in public with a group of
people.
Covering dinner etiquette
skills. Jane Creech, home-
maker and former school
teacher, led a session on
"Where will I eat. with whom,
which utensils to use. and
what to do in adverse situa-
tions?”

ing pieces and placesettings
(stainless, silverplate, electro-
plate sterling, crystal, ce-
ramic, pottery, and china) and

ior in social settings like the
school prom, banquets, and
restaurants.
In her humorous yet authori-
tative style. Punky Penberthv
informed the students about
the importance of developing
personal and professional
writing skills. Examples in-
cluded letter writing, thank
you notes, invitation, and
business letters.

journalist and TV announcer,
stressed the importance of
gathering and sending correct
information clearly using vocal
communication, like choice of
words and vocal tone, or non-
vocal communication, like eye
contact, posture, and clothing.
Stevens emphasized that the
rules of accepted mannerisms
are usually learned in the
home and reinforced through
social events, like worship ser-
vices, funerals, and sports ac-
tivities.
It is the responsiblity of ev
ervone to know and pass on
the ability to make life more
enjoyable and orderly for soci-
ety, she said; however, what is
accepted in the United States
is not necessarily so in other
countries.
Offering a handshake when a
kiss is expected might prove to
be an embarrasing mistake.
