AUSTIN - The Federal Earned
Income Tax Credit (EITC) can put
more money in the pockett of hard
working Texans, according to
Texas State Comptroller Carole
Keeton Rylander
"This year, nearly two million
^Jexas families will qualify for
. .port than S3 billion in EITC re-
. Jlinds. I urge every working family
slp see if they qualify," Rylander
t§aid.
•j0 "In 2001, the average EITC re-
fund to Texas families was almost
’$1,700. Families used this money
,^o pay bills and buy household
.Mgoods and school clothes for their
^children," Rylander said. "The
. .flTC is one of the quickest ways I
know to inject more than $3 billion
,,jnto the Texas economy, and it
benefits the hard-working families
Lflvho need it the most."
To claim the credit, the Internal
Revenue Service (IRS) requires
iamilies to meet specific income
-jj/evels and have a valid social secu-
rity number for every family mem-
.uber. A family that earned less than
;,$28,281 in 2001, with one qualify-
ing child, can get a tax refund of up
ilo $2,428. A family that has more
.than one qualifying child and
;,^ahied less than $32,121 in 2001
. can get a refund of up to $4,008. A
./refund of up to $364 is available to
iamilies or individuals without
Children, who meet age requtre-
^pients and earned less than $10,710
>2001.
,1 Taxpayers who expect to qualify
. for the EITC in 2001 and have at
n/least one qualifying child may sign
jipp for the Advance Earned Income
•v/Tax Credit (AEITC) at work, to
Receive part of the credit in each
paycheck throughout the year, in-
stead of waiting for a tax refund.
ni "For minimum wage families, the
bsAEITC is tike getting up to a $2 per
riohour pay raise,” Rylander said. "It's
money they can use immediately to
help make ends meet."
The comptroller's office conducts
an annual EITC awareness cam-
paign to help bring more federal tax
dollars home tp Texans. In 1991,
qbout one . million. .Texas families
Deceived refunds totaling $748,000.
Since then, almost 19 million work-
ing Texas families have brought
home a total of more than $24 bil-
lion.
Through April IS, families that
heed help preparing their income
tax returns can receive free help at
,the IRS' Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance (VITA) sites and at
American Association of Retired
iPersons (AARP) Tax Aid sites lo-
cated throughout the state.
