Sheffield,-“but it is a major eco-
nomic impact on our area. Crew
members used our motels, restau-
rants, and convenience stores.”
Still in production on Tuesday,
Oct. 25, plans are to wrap up then.
“We’re hoping that this will be a
benefit to us in that the producer
will want to film something again,”
said Sheffield.
THE HISTORIC CLIFTEX THEATRE was just one of the locations of the filming of the Pilgrim’s Pride
commercial. Producers chose Clifton for its “rural setting” and historic sites. Members of the crew and cast

information, the Lord, and jokes,
saying things like, “I realize that
I’m in cattle country, but, by the
way, do you know the answer to
mad cow disease—chickens.”
Holding 18 percent of the world
market to Tyson’s 23 to 24 percent
places Pilgrim’s Pride the second
largest poultry producer in the
world. Similar to comments in his
commercials, Pilgrim said, “Tyson
is the world’s largest producer of
fat, yellow chickens.” As a major
supplier to national food chains
like Chicken Express, Wendy’s,
Burger King, and Taco Bell, Pil-
grim said, “At one time, we were
selling to almost 55 fast food
chains.”
The last acquisition put
Pilgrim’s Pride in 18 states and 73
cities. Pilgrim described the agri-
cultural industry as cyclical. He
spoke of some of the logistics of
the company—farms and facili-
ties; chicken breeds; contract
farms—stating that less than ten
percent of the farms were com-
pany owned facilities. “We put
1,000 loads of products on 18-
wheelers on the roads seven days
a week,” said Pilgrim.
Questions camfe from the club
members, to which Pilgrim re-
sponded with charm and wit.
When asked about the problem, if
any, with Bird Flu, he responded
with, “The threat of the bird flu is
not something we see as a major
threat because our bio-security is
so much better. I’m told that in
China you can live in an apartment
and buy a live chicken on the first
floor and take it up and dress it.
You can’t do that in the U.S. be-
cause of our bio-security. If any
kind of a disease shows up of any
material, the chickens here in the
U.S. are immediately put down
and buried on the farm and the
farm is then quarantined. I don’t
lose sleep over the disease, but it
is out there and it is a real threat
to other countries.”
“That’s about all there is to us,”
said Pilgrim as he concluded the
business logistics of his speech,
but not before one of the members
encouraged Pilgrim to purchase a
local poultry facility and begin an
operation here. When asked
where one could get a hat like his
trademark pilgrim’s hat, he
quickly responded, “South Main
Street in Dallas.”
“We’re here in Clifton for the
purpose of making the commer-
cial,” he said. “We started making
commercials in 1982. The reason
that they picture me (in the com-
mercial) is that I don’t charge any-
thing extra.”
Questions began about the com-
mercial and its progress, to which
Dan Emery, vice president of mar-
keting, responded that the airing
of the “Clifton” commercial would
be during the Pilgrim’s Bowl the
2nd of December and then Jan. 9
in about 20 cities, including Dallas.
Before he concluded, Pilgrim
passed out a booklet to everyone
there entitled, Good News For
Modern Man. He said, “In 1975,1
had open-heart surgery. In 1982,1
had a heart-attack and I put this
book together in ‘82. It tells the
plan of Salvation, which you know
about; the reason to be saved, be-
cause of sin; the penalty of sin is
death, eternal death; God has
made the provision for your con-
dition, Christ; and our response to
his provision is to believe. Now,
that’s a 30 second commercial. All
of you can be saved. Being saved
is one thing, but we need to go be-

“The Ten Commandments,
and I added this in recent years
when we started to have all this
pushing and shoving about hid-
ing the Ten Commandments and
the Pledge of Allegiance and so
forth. My wife says that it’s natu-
ral for me that when somebody
says ‘do this’ that I always do the
opposite,” continued Pilgrim.
In response to the commercial
filming being done in Clifton,
Emery said, “It just had all the
character of a small town and
that was what we were trying to
capture. We’ve got a gazebo, and
a ranch, and a little downtown
theatre. We did about 15 different
things so we had a lot of require-
ments. We came because of all of
the character that is still here.”
Pilgrim said, “God has blessed
me. I know that you all have had
your blessings just to live in a
town like this.” He responded to
the question of his experiences
in Clifton by saying that it was,
“Amazing! Absolutely mind bog-
gling. The people, the friendli-
ness, and the willingness to put
forth an effort to accommodate
us was outstanding. God sent us
here for some reason, and you
made that easy for us.”
Lions Club members said, “I
think he just wanted to show you
a little bit of how Heaven was like.
