World Wide Web Access Available
At Nellie Pederson Civic Library
CLIFTON—The Nellie Pederson Civic Library’s fea-
tures eight computers purchased and installation through
a $30,000 Telecommunications Infrastructure Board
grant The powerful Sigma Systems devices are connected
to the World Wide Web through a wireless LAN with the
Clifton Independent School District’s computer system,
which was also purchased with a TIF grant. Since the
school district acts as Internet server for the library com-
puters, a filter system blocks Internet access to certain
topics which could be considered objectionable to youth-
ful users.
Otherwise, the immense Internet is open to the
public at the library without charge. Access to e-
mail accounts is available and used frequently by
many residents. Color inkjet printing and copier ca-
pabilities capability complete the package, which
includes Microsoft programming and anti-virus
screening intended to forestall hackers or pranksters
whose input could be damaging.
“There’s just a wealth of information available on the
Internet,” librarian Judith Merritt said. It includes ency-
clopedic and atlas material, home shopping, and the thou-

When Bush Ranch Airspace
Restrictions Are In Effect
CLIFTON—The FAA has significantly restricted
airspace around the Western White House, President
Bush’s ranch located just outside Crawford. The or-
der expanded the restricted zone to a 30 nautical mile
radius of the ranch, and closed airspace within 10
nautical miles of the property. The restrictions re-
quired all pilots to file a flight plan, obtain a discrete
transponder code, and remain in communication with
air traffic control when in the 30-mile limit.
The restrictions, are invoked whenever the Presi-
dent is in Crawford, impacts 14 public-use and 22
private airports, including Clifton Municipal Airport.
During the restrictions, the only aircraft activity
permitted in the area were those landing or taking
off. Flight training, pattern practice, and practice in-
strument approaches are not authorized in the 30-
mile ring, which creates an impact on flight schools
throughout the region.
Public-use airports affected by the restrictions in-
cluded those at Clifton, McGregor, Killeen, Lake Whit-
ney State Park, TSTC in Waco, Waco Regional
Airport, Draughon-Miller in Temple, Hood Army Air-
field, and many other facilities.
Clifton Aero owner Tim Talley said he understands
widening the restriction area. He said if officials de-
termined an aircraft was headed toward the
President’s ranch, there needs to be enough reaction
time for protection measures to be taken.
“There’s just so much time to get the airplanes or
helicopters down onto the intruder and to attempt to
get them to turn. This extra buffer zone just gives
them that much more time,” Talley noted.
sands of individual Web sites offered by—literally—the
world’s institutions. Among these is access to archives
maintained^ by newspapers, including The Clifton
Record.
The TexShare Databases (purchased and maintained
by the Texas Library and Archives Commission) are
available in the library and at home for library card-
holders. These databases meet information demands
from students, lifelong learners, business people, con-
sumers, and others — from homework help to geneal-
ogy, etc.
The Nellie Pederson Civic Library, named for a long-
time benevolent worker in social concern and civic bet-
terment, moved into its new home in July, 2000, and
presently houses about 7,000 volumes of fiction and re-
search, including an impressive Texas collection and a
separate room for a children’s section.
The library has been administered and maintained by
the Clifton Civic Improvement Society since its estab-
lishment in 1952. The Society recognized a need for a
larger facility with the availability of technology for Clif-
ton residents and through grants and individual and
business donations, they met that need with the new
