Lake Whitney Dam
Laguna Park,
Beautiful Lake Whitnev
This community on the Eastern edge of
Bosque County sprang up in the 1950s at
the base of the Lake Whitney Dam. One
of the youngest communities in the county,
its birth coincides with the completion of
the dam, which began construction in
1947.
Before the lake was built, the area was
used primarily farming and ranching.
Electricity did not arrive in the area until
the 1940s.
Hunting, fishing, and trapping were
popular pastimes then as they are now.
Big Rocky and Little Rocky Creeks sup-
plied most of the water for local families’
needs.
Texas Highway 22 had crossed the Brazos
River near the community of Walling Bend.
tionof
highway was moved with the construc-
of the lake, traveling directly over the dam
into Hill County. Laguna Park is a direct re-
sult of the lake and the highway’s relocation.
Upon completion of the roadway, busi-
nesses sprang up almost immediately.
Several lodges and fishing camps also
opened, and many are still in operation
today.
The West Shore Volunteer Fire Depart
ment is based in Laguna Park. In addi-
tion to its fire trucks, the department also
performs on-water and underwater res-
cue operations. Its annual Labor Day
Weekend fish fry is one of the largest fund-
raisers of its kind in the state.
Civic groups such as West Shore Civic
Association and Bluebonnet Arts and
Craft Club have played important parts
in the area’s history. A variety of busi-
nesses supply many of the everyday
needs of the community.
