In the recent emergency airlift
of thousand!, of bales of hay
for snoxvhound sheep and cat-
tle on the Hopt Indian Reserva-
tion north of Winslow, Arlz.
Colonel Stanley is a phot in
an Air Force Reserve unit at
Ellington AFB. Texas. He flew
as a crew member in one of
the transport planes, helping
pu«h the hay from the aircraft.
Units involved in’the opera-
tion used Luke as a staging
base.
Air Force crews dropped
mop? then 858 tons of hay dur-
ing the 161 sorties in the airlift?.
The airdrops were made from
100 to 200 feet above ground,
just high enough to break the
bales open on contact and low
enough for accuracy.
The colonel, who was com
missioned in 1944 through the
aviation cadet program, served
during the Korean War.
Colonel Stanley, son of Mrs.
Ina Lester of Fred, is a gradu-
ate of Silsbee Higtf School, He
received an M. B. A. degree
from the University of Hous-
ton.
His wife, Lurlene, is the
daughter Of Mr. and Mrs. Am-
fcerson M. Bradshaw of Silsbee.

training at the Naval Training
Center here.

val service he studied military
subjects and lived and worked
under conditions similar t o
mobile motorcycle accident oh (those he will encounter on his
first ship or at his first shore
station.
In making the transition
from civilian life to Naval ser-
vice, he received instruction
under veteran Navy petty offi-
cers. He studied seamanship,
as well as survival techniques,
military drill and othev sub-
jects.

ployer, according to B. B. Bark-
ley, administrative officer of
Internal Revenue In Beaumont,
Texas.

eighth consecutive year at the
Naval Air Station in New Or-

His squadron is part of the
nation-wide Naval Air Reserve
Training Command with the
mission -of providing air trans-
port support to the fleet along
with flight and ground crew
training. , *
As a member of Transport
Squadron 821 he drills one
weekend each month and
spends two weeks on active
duty each year.
The WSCS of the First
Methodist Church met Wednes-
day at 9:30 a. m. in the church.
