CRAWFORD - The Sth-Grade
“B-Team” Cubs closed out their
season with a 29-14 loss at Craw
ford last Thursday, The Cubs
ended the year with a 3-6 record,
3-3 in league play.
“This group improved tremen-
dously over the course of the sea-
son. They kept a positive attitude
and continued to work for im-
provement. They never gave up,”
reported Coach Mitch Williams.
Lorenzo Galindo was high
scorer for Clifton with six points.
Others scoring were Eric Aars (4),
Michael Gardner (2), and Ray Rec-
tor (2).

Clinches Post-Season Berth
CRAWFORD — The varsity
Lady Pirates took a 66-36 win over
Clifton’s Lady Cubs Tuesday night
to clinch a District 10-AA playoff
spot. Clifton dropped to 1-7 in dis-
trict play, 12-14 on the season,
while the Lady Pirates remain
unbeaten in the league with an 8-0
mark.
“We came out a little slow, and
had a difficult time with
Crawford’s press," reported Girls’
Head Coach Kevin Zuehlke.
“When we settled down in the sec-
ond and third quarters, we stayed
with them.”
Hali Henderson was high scorer
for the Lady Cubs with 12 points.
Others scoring included Amber
Hoffman (8, 2-3’s), Ashley Horst-
man (6,2-3’s), Katie New (4), Kris-
ten Moore (4), and Meredith
Strickland (2). New and Hender
son had two assists apiece, while
Sarah Musselman, Strickland, and
Horstman contributed one each.
“We cut the lead to seven points
late in the third quarter, but we ran
out of steam in the fourth," Coach
Zuehlke noted.
Henderson topped Clifton in re-
bounds with eight. Other boards
came from Moore (5), Hoffman (4),
New (4), Horstman (3), Mussel-
man (2), and Strickland (1). Mus-
selman swiped three balls from
Crawford, while New, Hoffman,
and Henderson grabbed two take-
aways each, and Strickland and
Horstman added one steal apiece
“Crawford is a very good team,
and should do well in the playoffs,”
concluded Coach Zuehlke.

The Lady Cubs play their fina
home game of the season tonight
(Friday), with an approximate tip-
off time of 6:30 p m. as they host
the DeLeon Lady Bearcats. Clif-
ton concludes the 2003-04 basket-
ball season on the road next
Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. start at
Hamilton.

Cubs Close Season
With Pair Of Wins
CLIFTON — The Clifton Cub “A-
Team” 7th-Graders closed out
their season with a 33-30 win at
Crawford last Thursday, followed
by a 51-32 victory over DeLeon
Monday in Clifton. They finished
the season with an 11-4 record, and
went 8-2 in district play.
"We played a great fourth quar-
ter that gave us the win,” Coach
Ryan Hunt said of the Crawford
match. “We battled from behind
the whole night. Our defense was
outstanding down the stretch,
holding the lead for us.”
Miguel Hernandez topped the
Cubs’ offense with 13 points. Oth-
ers scoring were Danny Ray Bird
(8), Jaime Hernandez (6), Dalton
Strickland (4), and Colton Albrecht
(2).
“I’m very proud to have coached
this team. This was the last game
of the year for this group, and we
feel like they finished on a positive
note,” Coach Williams concluded.

“Miguel Hernandez hit a big
shot with a minute left, and Strick-
land hit two big free-throws that
extended our lead to three in the
final seconds,” Coach Hunt re-
ported.
On Monday, the Cubs pounded
the Bearcats 51-32 to end the sea-
son on a high note.
“We finished up the year with
maybe our best-played game of
the season. The guys did an awe-
some job of setting each other up
and getting everyone involved,”
Hunt said.
M. Hernandez poured in 16
points to lead the offensive attack,
and Bird nested 12. Other Cubs
scoring included Strickland (7),
Albrecht (6), James Zahler (4),
D.J. Neelley (2), Cody Gummelt
(2), and J. Hernandez (2).
“There is a lot of good basket-
ball left for these guys to play in
the coming years. I am proud of
the way they played this year, and
I look forward to seeing them get
better each year,” Coach Hunt
concluded.

Cubs Takes Road Loss At Crawford
CRAWFORD — The 8th-Grade
Cubs “A-Team” stood at a 6-8
mark on the season, 4-5 in dis-
trict, after their 40-25 loss at
Crawford last Thursday.
“I thought we out-hustled and
out played them the whole
game. Unfortunately, we had a
quarter where we couldn’t buy
a basket,” explained Coach
Mitch Williams. “Were it not for
that, it would have been a dif-
ferent story.”
Bryce Maibauer led the offen-
sive with six points, while others
scoring included Dameon Shel-
ton (5), Ben Gardner (4), Nathan
Raines (4), John Hawkins (2),

and Robert Stover (2).
The Cubs played their final
game of the season Monday at

Lady Cubs JV Slips Past Hico
CLIFTON — The junior varsity
Lady Cubs took a 15-10 win over
Hico last Friday in Clifton.
“Great defensive game,” re
marked Coach Lynnette Wolf. “The
girls hung in and stepped it up in the
last quarter and took the victory.
“Denise Alvarado, Jennifer Flana
gan, Rachel Elwell. Katie Schulze,
and Katie Bekkelund did great jobs
on defense,” the coach noted "
Flanagan had four points on the
night, while Katie Kleine, Wendy
Collins, Alvarado, and Kelcey Al
brecht had two points apiece and
Rebekah Blanton added one point
to the total

Cubs End Season With Loss, Win
CLIFTO'n — The 7th-Grade “B
Team" Cubs ended their season
with a 4-7 record, 4-4 in league play,
following an 18-16 overtime loss at
Crawford last Thursday and a win
over DeLeon at home this past
Monday.
“We made a great comeback in
the second half to put the game
into overtime,” Coach Ryan Hunt
said of the defeat at the hands of
the Pirates. “They ended up scor
ing with less than 20 seconds left
in OT. We had the ball for the final
shot, but it just didn't fall. That’s
all you can ask for in that situa
tion.”

Rafael Villalpando had eight
points, followed by Mitchell Thiele
(4), Scott Smith (2), and Josh El-
well (2).
On Monday at the middle school
gym, Clifton closed out the season
with a 13-9 win over the visiting
Bearcats. Villalpando had six
points, Moe Shelton had four,
Smith scored two, and Elwell
added one.

“It was a great way to finish the
season. DeLeon tried to get back
into the game in the second half,
but we held off their charge,"
Coach Hunt reported.
"I’m proud of the way these guys
played tonight and the entire
year," the coach added.
