Lady Lions blast New Caney Eagles
By LINDA JACOBS
Sports Writer
LIVINGSTON—The Livingston
Lady Lions did their job Tuesday
night in Lion gym, taking a 74-64
must-win decision over the Lady
j Eagles of New Caney.
Livingston, 18-9 overall and 4-4
! in district, must now close out the
[season with wins over Jasper
| (Friday) and Dayton (Tuesday),
^plus, more importantly, hope that
Cleveland can defeat New Caney
Friday night.
Should New Caney win, they
[most likely will represent District
»19-4A as the runner-up team to
[Silsbcc.
j Cleveland, however, should be in
•hot pursuit, after soundly defeating
[Livingston 73-52 last Friday and
[Dayton 60-31 on Tuesday. They
[have to feel they arc back in the
[race at 17-13 overall and 5-3 in the
[district standings.
S New Caney, 13-13 overall and 5-
•3 in district, have lost two in a row
[(Silsbcc and Livingston) and will
[have to face the Lady Indians in
■Cleveland.
Should Cleveland defeat New
Caney, they would then need to
llosc to Silsbcc in the season finale
[in order for Livingston to end in a
5 three-way tic for second with
[Cleveland and New Caney.
! The three teams would finish the
• district race with identical 6-4
;
•.records. This is all under the as-
sumption that neither Dayton nor
[Jasper pulls any upsets in the final
[two games of the season.
• Confused yet!
i “It’s never good when you have
[to depend on somebody else to win
•or lose,” said Livingston head
[coach Sandy Gilbert, “but we need
■to root for Cleveland and Silsbcc.
I “We’ve got to lake care of our
'business the final two games,”
.added Gilbert. “It’s good that we
[have the two teams that we beat by
[the most points and the two teams
•that arc in the cellar.”
f- That’s not to say that Coach Gil-
[bert is taking the Jasper Lady Bul-
ldogs lightly. “Jasper probably has
!somc of the best athletes in the dis-
Itrict. They’re huge and they’re
•great jumpers. They’ve just had dif-
ficulty getting things going this
[year, but they’re great athletes.”
• Tip off times Friday in Jasper are
•5:00 p.m. for the JV’s and 6:30
;p.m. for the varsity.
Tuesday’s win
I The tables were turned in Tues-
day’s win over New Caney. The
[Lady Lions were cold offensively
!tn their 51-48 loss at New Caney,
Allowing New Caney to stake an
•11-0 lead that they were never able
jo overcome.
; The Lady Lions started strong
[Tuesday and ended up shooting
[48% from the field and 70% from
the free throw line.
[ Leading scorer
1 Jamie Richardson led three
[players in double digits with 21
points, followed by Cot>y Taylor
•with 16 and Brandy Babbs with 15.
• Richardson was on the mark for
•six field goals and 9-of-10 free
[throws.
[ Shelly Young pitched in eight
[points and both Lindsey Jones and
[Missy Price added five points each.
[Rounding out the Livingston score
[card was Allison Pritchard and
[Amanda Hale with two points each.
! Fouls also played a major role in
[Tuesday’s victory. New Caney was
■charged with 31 fouls and

DEFENSE-Livingston’s Jamie Richardson (14) defends a
shot by New Caney’s Latoya Jackson (31) during District
19-4A action Tuesday in Lion gym. The Lady Lions
posted a 74-64 win to keep in the piayoff race. Livingston
is 18-9 overall and 4-4 in the district standings.
is one of the games you can’t just
look at points. You can’t look at
points if you look at Shelly’s whole
career.
“She’s got the assists (142) and
she’s got the steals (95), but what
doesn’t show up anywhere in stats
is her getting the ball from point A
to point B, which she does with
such grace and finesse, such skill.
That doesn’t show up in any stats,
but there’s not a coach in the dis-
trict that doesn’t know about Shel-
ly”
Young, a three year starter for
the Lady Lions, is one of the many
talented senior ball players in Dis-
trict 19-4A. She will be leaving
some mighty big shoes to fill next
year.
Quick lead
It was Young that got the Lions
off to a quick start with a steal and
dish to Brandy Babbs for a layup at
the 7:21 mark. Another turnover
and layup by Babbs put the Lions
on top 4-0 with 6:47 left.
The quick start by Livingston
held throughout the game. The
Lady Lions never trailed, but...it
was never easy.
New Caney trimmed the lead to
one point (4-3) with 3:58 left.
Livingston answered with a 7-0
run, courtesy of nice outside shots
by Richardson and Young, to ex-
tend Livingston’s lead to 11-3 with
1:25 left in the quarter.
New Caney finished the quarter
with a 4-2 run to cut the margin 13-
7 at the end of one.
Livingston kept their lead at six
throughout most of the second
quarter until New Caney battled
back to within one (19-18) with a
Baldridge 3-pointer at the 2:22
mark.
New Caney’s final field goal of
the second quarter was a missed
shot rebound by Heather Patton at
the 1:50 mark for a 21-20
Livingston edge.
The Lady Lions finished the
remaining stretch with a 9-0 run,
connecting 7-of-8 free throws (in-
cluding two on a technical) and a
nice assist from Allison Pritchard
to Coby Taylor for a short jumper
in the lane with :15 seconds left.
The Lady Lions took a 10 point
lead in at halftime, 30-20.
Second half
The Lady Lions increased their
10 point halftime lead to as many
as 18 in the third quarter of play.
Six players contributed for the
Lady Lions during the stretch, in-
cluding five points from Taylor and
three points each by Richardson,
Young, Babbs and Jones. Amanda
Hale added one field goal.
necting 28-of-40 attempts from the
charity stripe. The Lady Lions were
charged with 20 fouls.
“They play such an aggressive,
attacking kind of basketball and
fouls hurt them tonight,” said Gil-
bert “Down there they played the
same aggressive basketball, but it
was never called.
“We watched the film from the
last game and there were six to
eight times that three and four
players would be on the floor in a
jumble and the ball was still in
play. That didn't happen tonight
When someone went down, there
was a call made, be it ours or theirs.
They had some people foul out, but
we had people in foul trouble too.”
All total, the Lady Lions hit 20
field goals, connected two treys and
hit 28-of-40 free throws. New
Caney connected only 14 field
goals, but kept in the game with
eight 3-pointers and 12-of-17 free
throws.
They were led in scoring by
senior (thank goodness) Kristi
Baldridge, who scored a game high
27 points. She hit two field goals,
five 3-pointers and 8-of-ll free
throws.
“She’s a fine player,” said Gil-
bert. “She’s their go to player and
she’s a take charge type player for
them. She’s a great one."
Young
Livingston’s take charge player
Tuesday, and likewise in many
games this year, was senior point
guard Shelly Young. She may not
lead in scoring each game, but
Young is the heart and soul of
Livingston’s leant.
"What a game she played,”
commented Coach Gilbert. “This
Young~and Babbs cach btt a 3-
poinlcr in the third to keep the lead
stretched. Young hit a trey with
6:38 left for a 33-22 lead, then
Babbs hit the long distance shot
with 4:24 left for a 17 point, 39-22
lead.
The Lady Eagles reciprocated
however, as Baldridge hit three
treys and teammate Jenny Master-
son connected one. The New Caney
barrage trimmed the lead to nine
points by quarter's end, 49-40.
Both teams gunned it out in the
final quarter of play, but the closest
the Lady Eagles could pull to
Livingston was eight points.
Livingston finished the quarter with
a 25-24 advantage.
Taylor and Richardson led the
assault with eight and six points,
respectively, with Taylor hitting
underneath and Richardson canning
the outside jumper.
Missy Price and Brandy Babbs
both contributed five points and
Young tossed in a free throw.
Baldridge did her best for the
Lady Eagles, scoring 11 of her 27
in the final frame.
Freshman
The Livingston Lady Lion fresh-
man team remained undefeated in
district play with a convincing 33-
15 win over the Lady Eagles.
Laura Burk and Kelli Foreman
led in scoring with seven and six
points, respectively. Ashley
McQueen, Janice Horton and
Kirsten Jackson added four points
each, and Christine Salzman,
Rebecca LcBlanc and Ronesha Fin-
nistcr pitched in two points each.
Tenitra Smith and Sonya Horton
scored one point each.
McQueen led with six rebounds
and Foreman had three steals for
the Lady Lions.
