With Equally Awesome Stats
Bosque County broke into Cyberspace
in a big way in September 19% as local
Internet access became a reality. Until
then, the only way to surf the Web any
decent amount of time at all was to ac-
crue a monthly long-distance phone bill
that had to be paid out on the installment
plan.
Since then, Clifton in particular and
Bosque County in general has enjoyed
the boon of the ’Net along with the rest
of the world. Dozens and dozens of qual-
ity websites have sprung up from local
sources, and more continue to hit the
web every day.
With that thought, I’d like to take this
opportunity to brag on a website that’s
very close to our hearts here at the
newspaper — The Clifton Record On-
Line.
Produced by webmaster
extraordinaire Shayne Embry of
Graphice Artem Promit, the site has
been up since July 1997, so it’s just over
two years old. The results of the site
have been nothing short of impressive.
Within a year, our site was averaging
an amazing 2,122 visits per month, over
70 per day That has continued to grow
steadily, with the most recent figures —
July 1999 — showing a total of 3,855 vis
its, over 120 per day. While some world-
wide sites have thousands of hits a day,
for a newspaper the size of The Clifton
Record, 120+ per day is incredible.
In its current configuration, our on-
line paper features three to five stories
per issue, plus photos, an opinion column
or editorial, and a calendar of events
GAP is currently working on an updated
site that will add features such as archive
searchability, expanded room for more
stories and photos, and more Although
no target date has been set for the up-
date, we’re looking forward to the
changes, and we’re sure our readers are,
too.
We get quite a few e-mails every week
from our on line readers. Many drop us
notes just to thank us for our coverage,
but others express the desire to access
more information like obituaries, birth
announcements, classified ads, and
more With the updated version, that and
more will be possible, although the deci
sion as to exactly what will go on-line has
yet to be finalized.
The Record’s presence on-line has not
gone unnoticed by the major search en
gines. Their “spiders” constantly iden
tify our on-line info and feed it back to
those doing searches on Clifton and re-
lated subjects
“At one point, when you searched
AltaVista for ‘Clifton,’ the first 20 or so
matches were for The Clifton Record
On-Line,” Embry noted
In its current form, our website also
allows visitors to view the front page of
print edition of The Record in its entirety
by downloading an Adobe Portable Docu
ment Format (PDF) file. Looking
through the statistics on who downloads
the PDFs, we came across some very
interesting entries
Some of the more recent entities to
download our front pages on a fairly
regular basis include the Oklahoma
State Regents for Higher Education,
Baylor University, Nellis Air Force
Base in
N e -
v a d a ,
and the
Lockheed Martin Corporation. Of par-
ticular interest are the repeated
downloads originating from the U S.
House of Representatives as well as
from none other than the White House
itself. Makes you wonder just who in
Washington, D C. is reading the
Record On Line (and what lists we
might be on!).
The Clifton Record, Bosque
County’s oldest newspaper by de
cades and decades, has always prided
itself on bringing a quality product to
its readers The on-line version contin
ues that reputation, in our humble
opinions, and we look forward to what
the future may bring as we continue to
upgrade our printed and on line prod
ucts
