Crawford Conquers Cubs

CRAWFORD — After spot-
ting their opponents 21 points
in the first quarter, the Varsity
Cubs played head-to-head with
Crawford’s Pirates, but the
deficit was too much to over-
come. The Pirates improved to
2-0 in District 21-AA with the 42-
18 win, while the Cubs slip into
a tie for third at 1-1.
The game’s statistics did not
tell the tale. Clifton had 268
yards total offense to the Pi-
rates' 285 The Cubs had 15 first
downs, allowing Crawford 13.
The Cubs had four turnovers,
but gathered in a pair.
But where it counted — on
the scoreboard — the Pirates
dominated, especially early on.
First Quarter
After winning the coin toss
and electing to receive,
Crawford needed just seven
plays to march 80 yards to
score with 9:20 left in the first.
After the ensuing kickoff, the
Cubs fumbled on their first play
from scrimmage, and 15 sec-
onds after their first touch-
down, Crawford was suddenly
up 14-0.
Clifton went three-and-out
on their next possession and
punted from deep in their own
territory, with the Bucs taking
over at the Clifton 37. Three
plays later, at the 7:15 remain-
ing mark, Crawford had
jumped out to a 21-0 advan-
tage.
The two squads then traded
punts before the Cubs took
over at their own 10. Quarter-
back Taylor Tims immediately
fired upfield to Nathan
Townley, who hauled the pass
in for a 35-yard gain to near
mid-field.
A hold pushed the Cubs back
10, and Tims threw incomplete
on first, but connected again
with Townley, who took the
catch to the far sideline for
seven. Tims then fired into cov-
erage, and Dameon Gobin
grabbed the ball and hung on,
taking it 17 yards for a first at
Crawford’s 40.
Bryan Sanders went right for
four, then Tims tossed to Ben
Gardner in the left flat, who
lofted the ball to Townley. He
;athered the pass and took it in
or the score. The extra-point
kick failed, and Crawford led 21-
6 with under a minute left in the
first

CLIFTON — The Bruceville-
Eddy Eagles come to town Fri-
day night for a District 21-AA
clash at Cub Stadium. Both the
Varsity Cubs and Eagles come
into the contest tied for third
with 1-1 records. Bruceville-
Eddy is 4-3 on the season, while
the Cubs sit at 2-5. Since 1986,
the Cubs lead the series be-
tween the two teams 6-0.
“They have some good speed
in spots,” Cubs Head Coach/
Athletic Director Curtis
Goforth said of the Eagles.
“Their receivers and defensive
backfield have good speed, and
those same kids had a good
showing at last year’s district
track meet.”
The Eagles returned about a
dozen lettermen from last
year’s 3-7 (0-5) squad. They al-
ready have improved on both
won-loss records, having one
more win thus far than last
year, and going 1-1 the first two
weeks in district.
Bruceville-Eddy’s season
has been one of streaks. They
opened with a 40-6 loss to
Thrall, then posted wins over
Blooming Grove, Dawson, and
Oakwood. The Eagles then lost
to Melissa and Hamilton before
getting back on the winning
track with a 27-0 district blank-
ing of Moody last Friday.
Goforth said the Eagles ap-
pear to rely a lot on big plays
for their offense.
“From what I’ve seen, they
‘big play’ people more than just
marching down the field,” he
explained.
“Hopefully we’ll come out
and execute, not turn the ball
over, and hopefully take some
of the momentum we had from
the last three quarters at
Crawford, and build on that,”
