CLIFTON PUBLIC
SCHOOL NEWS
Last week we had our mid-term
tests, but the worst is yet to come.
Report cards will be given out
Wednesday.
Last Friday night the basketball
girls weren’t too busy to win two
games over Whitney. The A game
was won by 30 - 26 and the B
game 21 to 1. The same night the
boys’ teams played Waco Tech and
after a well played game, lost 31-
28. The B team also lost 10 to 11.
The basketball teams have been
playing good basketball, so let’s all
come out and back them.
To our regret, we are losing
Mrs. Billie Branch, teacher of
commercial subjects. But to re-
place her will be Miss Martha Crip-
pen, whom we are sure we will like
just as well.
We have been changing our
schedules this week and getting j
ready for the new term.
Four of our seniors, Betty Cal-
lan, Drucilla Whitley, Cecil Brash-
er, and Josephine Urban graduated
at mid-term. These students will
receive their diplomas at the end
of the year with the rest of the
Seniors.
Speech is being offered to the
students of High School for the
first time. It will be taught by Mr.
Harper. We are all looking for-
ward to this subject.
Bette Elder, Reporter.
CARD OF THANKS
We .wish to show our apprecia-
tion to our many friends for the
words of kindness, the flowers and
food in this hour of sorrow on the
death of our husband and father.

Improved Practices
Pay FHA Borrowers
The new system of controlling
cotton insects. by pre-square poi-
soning paid dividends for approxi-
mately 100 families in thirteen
Central Texas counties during
1949, according to Robert A. Wells,
Bosque County Supervisor of the
Farmers Home Administration. Mr.
Wells has recently received the
final report of the field records of
these selected families, which
showed that an average increase of
lint yield of 157 pounds per acre
was obtained where the pre-square
cotton poisoning program was fol-
lowed with other improved prac-
tices such as planting cotton fol-
lowing winter legumes, early plant-
ing, and the use of good seed. The
average yield per acre of the 100
fields on which the improved prac-
tices were followed was 370 pounds
of lint per acre compared with 213
pounds on other fields.
The new cotton insect control was
based upon the use of either toxa-
phene or a 3-5-40 mixture of
benzene hexachloride, which was
recommended by Bureau of Ento-
mology at Waco and the Texas
A. & M. College. Close supervision
by the County Supervisors was
maintained throughout the grow-
ing season which enabled the fam-
ilies to apply these latest practices
in order to get increased cotton
yields.
The results of these tests are
particularly timely this year, since
cotton acreage allotments will
compel many Bosque County farm-
ers to increase their per acre yield.
Mr. Wells reports that several
local FHA borrowers have arrang-
ed to follow the improved practice
program this year to obtain in-
creased yields.
