Like a tree, a Christian must be rooted in good 'soil'
LIVINGSTON Bl
iwiry
Sermon of ,.,v. s ,
the week
By REV. WALTER FROBST
Psalm 1:1*3
Joyce Kilmer has written a
beautiful poem, which has been set
to music, entitled ’Trees.” When
we think of a giant oak tree, which
once was but a tender plant which
could be destroyed by a child's foot,
we agree with the poet that ’only
God can make a tree." God is the
author and source of life: be it {riant
life, animal life, or human life.
But the Psalmist compares a
righteous man to a ’tree planted by
the riven of water, bringing forth
fruit in his season, his leaf not
withering."
Every child of God is LIKE A
TREE. 1) Growing downward,
drawing nourishment and strength;
2) Growing upward and outward,
bearing fruit.
I. A HEALTHY TREE KEEPS
GROWING DOWNWARD.
Through the years the roots keep
multiplying and growing downward
into the fertile soil, absorbing and
drawing moisture and sustenance.
While there are variations in the _ __
lowls of trees, a healthy tree need to gay and night" He does not wait
be well rooted. until he has broken these laws, but
meditates, gives attention to
conform his life to the Divine Will,
and roots all his thinking and
willing with God and God's
intentions. "We should fear and
love God"-God is supreme.
While we can never perfectly
keep God's Law, the Word of God
reveals what God has done for us in
Christ, through the Gospel, the
good news of salvation in Christ.
Rooted in God's love, living with
Christ, we daily draw forgiveness
conditions, since his sense of God's
presence would be obscured; his
conscience impaired. He draws
nourishment and inspiration from
God's Word and a living
relationship to the Savior.
"His delight is in the Law of the
Lord." The Old Testament godly
found delight in the Law of the
Lord. The stars move in their
course by fee Law of the Lord.
Psychology sets forth fee laws of
God in operation of human minds.
Sociology seeks to know the law of
how individuals and groups react
upon each other. Then there are the
spiritual and moral laws of God,
summed up in the Ten
Commandments, requiring love to
God an dlove to man. These moral
laws of God, describing our
relationship to God, to others, and
attitudes to our own life, are not
irritants to make life miserable or
more difficult, but are an expression
of God's love-who desires our best,
and considers life, our life and our
neighbor's life as vert oredous.
"In His law He meditates both
mtgfe. guidance, power, and
out of gratitude to Hime, who first
loved us, we seek id live our life.
"Planted like a tree, by fee rivers
of water." Probably our parents did
Education and example. In Worship
and Prayer, we have, like a tree,
been watered by fee rivers of God's
grace and promises.
II. God's Trees Grow Upward and
Outward. God's trees rooted in the
soil of God's Word and God's love,
forgiveness and blessing, grow not
only downward, but UPWARD and
OUTWARD, brining forth fruit.
Their leaf also does not wither-they
pass from youth to maturity and old
age, green with fee beauty of
holiness and godliness. The storms
of affliction, and fee winds of
adversity come, but they stand
secure, become stronger in fee
Lord. One of the most wonderful
and beautiful things in life is an old
man or woman, who have outlived
the storms, and grown in kindness,
wisdom, understanding, and
patience-fiuth. loyalty, endurance,
gratitude—standing
foundation.
The fruits of righteousness are by
Christ Jesus to fee glory and praise
of God-love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith, meekness,
temperance-crucifying fee flesh
wife its lust.
Everyone has roots and branches.
We occupy a place, we make fee
world better or worse, we are either
building wife Christ or aginst him.
We warn to be "like a tree, planted
by fee rivers of water."
Look to the soil in which you
growing. From where do you draw
■nourishment and strength and
guidance and motivation. Look at
the direction in which you are
growing, and see what you are
producing.
We need both fee downward and
the upward and outward growth to
be happy and blessed. "Blessed is
the man, woman, or child.”
we
us to
happiness and
usefulness here and now and
eternally.

THE LIGHTER SIDE
Even so the Christian needs to be
rooted, on the right foundation, and
growing in fee right soil. The
Psalmist first gives us a negative
description: "He does not walk in
fee counsel or advice of fee
irreverent, far then he would soon
be standing in their way of life,
adoptiim their scale of values and
code of conduct, and find himself
silting in fee seat of fee scornful.”
God's trees cannot thrive in that
sort of soil, or thrive under those

At this time coordinators need to
actually get here. Fortunately and
unfortunately, feat day will finally
be here this Saturday.
I feel fortunate because I am
looking Coward to taking off,
new part of my life,
decisions and choices for
and basically, making
things happen for myself ana
starting on my way to make the
dreams I have for myself come
about
But also, I feel unfortunate
because in order to start on fee new
.things in my life I must leave
behind fee old things. Not feat I
will forget these things and not
value them, but still, I have to
leave them behind.
In fee four years I have been here
in Livingston, I have learned some
bad lessons. I've learned some good
lessons, and I have also learned the
diftereMfetetween friends uid true
friends. There have been, for me,
some hard times, but all in all, I
will always remember fee people
that stood behind me no matter
what
Basically, 1 really just don't know
exactly how to end this column
because it is also one of those
things feat I am going to leave
behind. This will be myjaat, but 1
After going to my mailbox and
finding another letter stating 1 could
become a millionaire, I almost
threw it in the trash. But on the
outside of the envelope it read
"Prize enclosed." Naturally 1 got
curious, so I opened it, and there it
was, my prize!, a goldtone
sweetheart necklace with an
Austrian Crystal set in a heart
shaped pendant. I was flabbergasted.
At List! A prize!
My mailbox has been flooded
each week with all kinds of
contents to win money. There is
always a catch to it, just read fee
fine print: send S3 judging fee or
send S9.93 for Handling or order
magazines. I always read them and
then I throw them away!
I wonder how long it will take
for fee necklace to turn green on
my neck?
I was visiting over in the
Housing Project fee other day. and I
couldn't believe my eyes. It looks
so run down wife tali grass in the
yards and playground. It used to be
kept well groomed at all times.
Paper and bottles, cans and all kinds
of Debris litte the lavns and streets.
The citizens who live there could
pick up in their areas, and 1 would
napn;
find out why u docsn t get mowed,
if 1 lived in the project. I'm going
to look into it very soon.

1 was watching some movies the
other day and felj so disappointed. It
doesn't seem to matter what the
movie is about, roles for Hispanic
actors are limited to those of
illiterates, drug addicts/pushers,
criminals, etc. It really makes me
mad. I don't understand why they
never get better parts in movies.
They have ns much talearas anyone
