LIVINGSTON - Four teenagers
escaped critical injuries despite a
wild ride in a pickup truck that
ended up upside down on Old Long
Pull Road in Indian Springs.
A 1992 Chevrolet pickup truck,
driven by 18-year-old Carla Jo Holt
of Livingston, was eastbound on
the subdivision road when it be-
came airborne after topping a hill,
according to Texas Highway Patrol
Trooper Glen Goodwin. After the
truck returned to the roadway, out
of control, it struck several trees
and an embankment and rolled end-
over-end at least one and a half
times before coming to rest upside
down, the trooper indicated.
Firefighters from Indian Springs
and Livingston responded to the
scene to assist in raising the
vehicle, which had one of the three
passengers trapped underneath.
The driver, who was cited for
unsafe speed and violating driver’s
license restriction "B", was listed as
having sustained possible injuries.
The three passengers - Richard
Holt, 15, Vernon Bearss, 15, and
James Gregor, 19, all of Livingston
-- wen all listed in the trooper’s
report as having sustained non-in-
capacitating injuries.
The accident occurred at 9:30
p.m.
An Onalaska woman was injured
in a two-car accident at 9:45 a.m.
Friday on U.S. 190,8.1 mites west
of Livingston.
A 1994 Chevrolet driven by
Jasper Paul Byerly, 75, of
Beaumont was westbound, towing
a travel trailer. A 1985 Chevrolet
driven by Pamela Ann Pennington,
45, of Onalaska was also
westbound, behind Byerly. Byerly
s'
signaled and began to make a left
turn into a private drive and, ac-
cording to Trooper Larry Pitts, Pen-
nington was unable to stop and her j
car skidded into the travel trailer. J
Pennington was listed as having
sustained non-incapacitating in-
juries in the accident and was cited
for failure to control speed.

Corps of Engineers to lower
Steinhagen Lake by six feet
JASPER - The Fort Worth Dis-
trict, U.S. Army Corps of En-
gineers, is planning to temporarily
lower the level of B.A. Steinhagen
Lake by six feet in an effort to
reduce the growth of certain un-
desirable aquatic plants. The draw-
down will begin on Jan. 18, and
will end on Feb. 29.
Lowering the lake level will ex-
pose several thousand acres of
Avatex. hyacinth and hydrilla to
freezing temperatures and sig-
nificantly reduce the growth of the
plants. A similar drawdown in 1994
was determined by the Craps of
Engineers and Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department to be success-
ful.
Water hyacinth and hydrilla left
unchecked normally produces
dense mats which eventually covers
thousands of acres of water surface,
making it difficult, for boats to
navigate and preventing fishermen,
hunters and other lake users from
reaching the upper areas of the
lake.
' The planned drawdown has been
coordinated with local, state and
federal agencies and other or-
ganizations having an interest in
the management of B.A. Stein-
hagen Lake. As a result of this
coordination, the drawdown will
begin 18 days later than the one in
1994 lo coincide with the last
weekend of duck season.
Success of the drawdown will
depend on the frequency, duration
and intensity of cold weather con-
ditions during the drawdown
period.
