The county of Jaspa and the
town are both named for Sagem
William Jaspa, Who was a hero oi
die American Revolution.
Jasper was a sokha who fought
with William Moultrie's regiment
in 1775. Jaspa was made sergeant
and was ordered to Fl Sullivan and
there be bravely rehoisted the flag
ova the fort in the face of British
gunfire. Jasper then transferred to
the Grenadier Company of the
Second Carolina Regiment and
was mortally wouxled on Oct. 9,
1777.
Eight states have counties
named after Jaspa. but Jaspa
county is tiie only one with the
county seat also having his name.
Jaspa county was one of 23 origi-
nal counties created by the Repub-
lic of Texas.
While visiting in Jasper, star-
ling, lleam. Kelly and Kalina
loured the Beaty-Orton house,
home of Texas Senator John
Thomas Beaty.
Beaty purchased the property
from Thomas Beaty who was his
grandfather in 1888. The current
style of the house is Queen Anne
but was originally built in (he
Greek Revival Style.
During Beaty’s declining years,
he asked his youngest daughter,
Marquerile and ha husband Jim
Orton to move into he house. Af-
ter Marquente Ortan’s death, the
city of Jaspa purchased the home
and did all the renovations.
