were thus housed the Guards surrounded that end
of the bulldlngtand -commenced firing In before
those Inside had prepared for shooting out. This
frightened them and they began to Bet out faster than
they got In but In doing so they were certain to be
shot down. Seventeen of those who remained see-
ing the fateot those who attempted to escaut. snr-
renaerea oy laying down their arms the only-way
In which they could make themselves understood.
Only one besides these-escaped and he was badly
wounded. At least that was the statement of those
captured. It was one of this company of CoBta El-
cans whose ammunition ignited and set fire to his
clothes and burnt him horribly. 'When I saw the
remains it looked as though it had been skinned.
He was shot as the only means of ending his misery.
On this side of the town the enemy got Into some
vacant houses which they attempted to fortify but
the artillery soon caused them to evacuate. It wa3
in this quarter that several wells were found Into
wnicn me enemy's aeaa had beea thrown.
The attack upon the north side of the town was
equally gallant and more vigorously maintained.
Here they were led on by an Italian who had form-
erly been a prisoner la ISlvas. He was rescued at
the lime the Costa Ulcan brig was blown up by Capt.
Fayeoux and being a foreigner was retained after
the other rescued were sent back or permitted to
return to their homes. He w stimulated by hatred
and revenge. He fought well and bravely and suc
ceeded several times In bringing the greasers to the.'
cnarge alter their officers had abandoned the at-
tack. Being in charge of a brass four pounder he
led oh the charge and succeeded in getting it within
three or four hundred yards of one of thebarrlcadcs
where he discharged it once or twice. Beinc mounted
on truck wheels his gun was rather an unwieldy
affair. Still he would not abandon it and succeeded
In rallying a force to his support. Through his efforts
the ht kept up on that side of the town until
about tea o'clock. As soon as the four pounder was
got within fair view Gen. Hennlngsen brought one
cf his six pounders to bear nponlt and succeeded In
it only disabling the gun butlts commander. Thl
ended the contest. No effort of offijers or padres
could induce the men to attempt to rescue their ar-
tillery. A reserve of five hundred had been held in
readiness Id support the Italian Captain but when
taey learned thatso many orthclr;comradcs had
fallen before the deadly rifle the pleadings and com-
mands of'the padres and the free application of the
rwora by the officers were insufficient to induce
this'reserve to face the music Several times It came
within sight of the abandoned cannon but fled as
soon as a six pound shot ras sentwhhalng Into their
midst.
About eleven o'clock the enemy withdrew leaving
beside their cannon a large amount of fixed ammu-
nition a large number of guns clothing and other
traps too' tedious to mention.
Besides the 'dead a number of wounded were left
upon thefiefd. "fin a street one srpjare farther east
vuusiucimiiciiuuiucr 01 uie enemy got possession
of several vacanthonses by approaclungnndcr their
cover and culling holes through the walls not ex-
posed to view. 'The doors of these were barricaded
by tearing up the floors which were .paved with
large flat brick. As soon as It was dis'covereil that
the enemy was in possession of these houses the ar
tlllety was brought to bear upon them which soon
routed the Inmates. But the houses protected tfielr
retreat and enabled them to carry off their dead
and wounded. Coraequcnlly there was not one of
these found uponthii "irtioj fcf the field. Owing to-
tals fact their loss in 1 lied pnU wounded could not
be ascertalncdby what were found iu.on the ficli
But upon the other street where the artillery had a
more opcufieIdabout fifty dead were left and eight
o ten wounded. The entire loss of the encmyin
killed and wounded and taken prisoners must have
been between four and five hundred while that of
den. Walker was but four men killed and tHrceor
four wounded cne of whom afterwards died. ''
Take it all in all this was a disastrous defeat of the
allied forces and it was the general Impression that
theywbuld never risk another attack upon Rivas.
Jlany were of the opinion that If theyj had been
hotly pursued they would have abandoned their for-
tified position at Qnartro Esquinas and fled back
la Ban Jorge. I am satisfied myseir that pursuit
would have caused the desertion of one-half the al-
lied forces.
I omitted to notice that on the 22d Gen. denning-
sen returned the fire of the enemy' twenty-four
pounder and threw twenty six pound shot into his
barricade) ' TEXAS.

Walker's troops March 1 C(h lSST.'at San Jorg e and
between that place and Riras. In doing so I hoped
to accomplish a two-fold -object: First to show the
superiority of his forces over those of the allies in
eveiy thing that constitutes the soldier Secondly
to point to the fact that had it sot been for the large
number of desertions from his ranks he conld not
and would not have been reduced to the necessity of
surrendering to Capt. Davis of the United States
Xavy as the only means of saving his sicl: and
wounded from massacre which would have be n the
result had he cut his way through the enemy's lines
of fortifications. This Gen. Cafias well knew and it
was to prevent this that he on the part of the allies
requested Capt. Davis to come and Interfere in be-
half of the disabled whom he knew Gen. Walker
had cot the means of carrying with him even If he
had had the force to protect them. From the 23th of
January up to the 1st of May there were four .hun-
dred and seventy desertions a force greater than
that which drove the enemy out' of San Jorge and
defeated him after he was ont In an open field light
a force sufficient to have marched In or out of

While 3en. Walker was at San Jorge the enemy
made two demonstrations against T.Iras. This was
evidently ajuseas they retired in both Instances after

tack they lost three men. Bat little of Importance
occurred after the 16th until the 22d except that the
enemy continued to fortify his position and take
every precaution -against a surprise attack by re-
moving ereiy thing which could give the least shelter
to as approaching foe. Gen. Hennlngsen went lei-
surely to work putting Riras in a better condition for
deTence so that it could be defended by a Email force
against vast odds.
On the 10th CoL Caycee with a small party of
Rangers went to San Juan del Snr to receive ti oops
eirected from California by the Orizaba He re-
turned on the afternoon of the 20th bringing with
lAmtutnt'j-onc recrnlts under command of Capt.
Chatfield. The number should have been at least
two hundred and would have been had the time of
the steamer's departureheen changed so that those
who -came to San Francisco were compelled to remain
there on expense from the 20th of February until the
th of March. Owing to this there being no provi
sion made- for their support all but twenty-one of
two hundred and fifty were forced to seek their own
support consequently were not on hand when the
steamer sailed. The same thing occurred on the pre-
vious trip when only seventy-odd out of three hun-
dred who came to San Francisco to embark for Ni-
caragua did so. Besides the recruits the Orizaba
brought three hundred and six pounds of shot which
were very much needed. Of these the Rangers
brought back one-half.
Sunday the 23d the enemy opened on Rivas from

Ens. News : It Is now a rather settled matter that
an emigration party will leave Mobile on the 10th ot
next month for Nicaragua. They go- unarmed and
will claim the protection of the American govern-
ment under the terms of the Cass Yrissarrl treaty.
But the New YorL .Express has discovered that the
intention of those emigrating to Nicaragua are not
of the most pacUV character. It our government
should fall to protect them In person and property
after they arrive in that country I should not be at
all surprised If these emigrants undertake their own
protection. The ExpresJ says the Ilerman which left
New York for the purpose 01 going rounu tne uoru
to take her place In the new line of transportation
between California anil the Atlantic States took Bve
hundred and fifty pass tngers which it is now believed
were not destined for 'California but for Ban Juan
del Snr where they are to land for the purpose of
Invading Nicaragua. The Express further Intimates
that the new company lsno company except in name
and that Gen. Walker is the head and front of the
whole movement and paid out the money for the
steamer Herman her repair and outfit. Well truly
his enemies are determined to make Gen. Walker a
most wonderful man. One thing Is certain they have
failed to crush him or defeat his projects. When
they are sure they havfe fully defeated and put him
down he rises phoenix-like from the ruins beneath
which it is hoped they have buried him with renewed
strength and energy. Or on thing Gen. Walker's
enemies may rest assured a&l that is that it he suc-
ceeds In getting back ta Nicaragua he will be certain
to re-establish himself despite his enemies at home

through the roof of the General's bed-room but did
no harm.
On the morning of the 23d contrary to the expec-
tation' of every body In Hlvas the enemy made an
.MtaclLppon that place. The first attack was mado
Spouithejhospltal which was made between three
andTourVclockcThisjvas soon after followed by a
general assault-upon thatpart of the town to the
south east and north of the plaza. The attack upon
the hospital was evidently made with the view of
drawing the forces from the quarters around and
near the plaza but It failed of its object. The hos-
pital building was one of those which had been pre-
viously held and fortified by Gen. Cafias. Besides
the sick and wounded there were In the hospital
thirty able-bodied men. The wounded. who were not
wholly disabled having their beds near the rear wall
which the Costa Rlcans had perforated with port
holes could set up and fire out with but little trou-
ble. They had been provided with guns for such an
emergency. The rear was the only part ot the build-
ing which the enemy could assail without being ex-
posed to the fire from the town. In the rear ot the
hospital three sentinels were poBted only one or
whom was on duty at the time of the attack and so
stealthily had the enemy approached under coverof
the mango trees which are on each side of the walk
leading to the cocoa estate that the adrance was
within thirty yards before It was discovered. The
sentinel then attempted to -give the alarm by firing'
lis gnnbnt It missed fire. The enemy on being dis
covered made a desperate rush to gain the rear en-
trance before the sentinels could enter and give the
alarm. In this he was defeated. The sentinels had
barely time however to enter and close the door
which One of them had the presence of mind to fasten
'with a piece ot timber provided tor that purpose
when the enemy attempted to force It. With the Im-
plements brought for that purpose the assailants
burst a. hole through the door on the first assault
sufficiently large to have admitted a man's body.
The enemy got possession of the port holes and com-
menced firing Into the hospital. So sudden and un-
expected was the attack that the Inmates were jjsnlc-
stricken and many of those who could were falling
back. At this critical moment Dr. Dtlman one of
the hospital surgeons who. had been standing senti-
nel on the offside of the building In a square enclos-
ed by adobe alls entered the hospital and ordered
those who were able to get to the port holes. His
timely efforts saved the building and its Inmates at
least those who could not have escaped by Sight.
Many of the wounded did good service in the way of
shooting; for If they did not kill they frightened.
The next morning guns were found with their lock
shot off the effect of a Joint occupancy ot the port
holes. Finding that tha hospital was prepared for
a vigorous defence the enemy fell back but 'were
several times rallied by the comsaiding officer who
appeared determined to effect an entrance. Dr. Dol-
man seeing no prospect ot getting rid ot these trou-
blesome and ill-mannerly visitors so long as their
leader was permitted to encourage them on con
cluded It was best as a matter of necessity to dis-
pose 'of him ' Ileaccordingly paid special attention

Geu. Jackon Bnel vrltli Dickinson.
To Vie Edllort of the jfem VorbXctc):
Some Ume'agol saw in your paper a statement
about the duel between General Jackson and Dickin-
son fought before the year 1800 which account was
ciToucuua iiugercrai particulars. Desirous of cor-
recting these errors 1 offered to furnish you an ac-
count of that duel told me by Gen. Jackson's biog-
rapher and intimate friend John n. Eaton. Ho and
I were once traveling together and I Inquired how
he obtained such accurate Information abont Gea.
Jackson for that many circumstances contained In
his book I knew myself to be true ne said he fre-
quently visited Gen. Jackson and they used to sit up
late talking over events and on his return to his
bed room he committed to paper what the General
said concerning himself. '
The followlngis General Jackson's own account of
the duel told to General Eaton who related the same
to me:
Jackson settled at. Nashville between the years
1700 and 1S0O and began the practice of law. Dick-
inson was already there following the samp profes-
sion. He was a great duelist having killed several
In duels and almost certain to kill at the first fire.
His mode of firing was uncommon. Instead of rais-
ing his pistol from his side to fire at the word he
would bring It down from above until he got it to the
proper level and then fire. Ail of the merchants In
Nashville had Dickinson retained In their behalf and
he being the only lawyer there until Jackson came
no redress could be obtained by the opposite side.
Gen. Jackson refused to be retained by thesa mer-
chants to the exclusion of all other parties. The
consequence was that he Issued sixty writs to the
first term of the court atNaBhville.
He Issued writs against the merchants who until
then had gone scot free. This Irritated them and
they being desirous or getting Gen. Jackson out or
the way Incited Dickinson to provoke a dueL He
beuan by acting on trials offensive to the General.
He remonstrated with Dickinson and plainly told
him that he wouid-not submit to such disrespectful
treatment.
Dickinson persisted and Gen. Jackson challenged
him. The time and place for the combat were fixed
upon and the news spread for miles around. There
were at least two two thousand persona on the
ground and bets wtre made as U It were a horse
race.
Dickinson hlmseir bet that he would kill Jackson
at the first fire. Dickinson fired first and his ball
hit Jackson on the right pap and peeled his breast.
He had a callous lump there until the day ot his
death. As soon as the smoke of Dickinson's pistol
blew away he saw Gen. Jackson still standing and
exclaimed "Hav'nt I killed the damned rascalyetf"
Gen. Jackson told Gen. Eaton that until then he
meant to give him his life but on hearing these
words he raised his pistol fired and killed Dickinson
instantly. 0.
