wat one that had great possession*."
Nineteen centuries ago Christ called
a young man in the full vigor of his
youth and power to a service that de-
manded self-denial, sacrifice and un-
selfish service. The young man
turned away. He could not meet the Introductions to me* people in your
test. Today Christ calls again, in t|tihjow|t circle. Have them at your
year 1918, to strong, vigorous young j parties, take them to the theatte, and
men. Again it is a call to a service of !j0 y0|tr duty by at kbst one defender
1 acnficc and unselfish ser-
to form on all occafMks.
Europe cries out to tis to profit from
her sordid experience with these social
traitors. Be attenthfe to your absent
neighbor's family-^his bride—h i s
sister. Visit them* entertain them,
forefetid pernicious Acquaintances by
self-denial,
vice. Will the young manhood of
America turn away? Can we meet
courage?
i It is a call for self-denial in all things
that arc not necessities, to the displace-
ment of fancies and frivolities with the
firm purpose of a fighter. It is a call
for sacrifice in more than money or
possessions or prestige, yea, a sacri-
fice of self, not unto death, hut rather
tlirit there may he life more abundant
and tree. It is a call for service, not
merely to follow blindly a great leader
or a great banner, but to uphold a
ni ghty ideal, to champion humanity'll
c.i isc for freedom, to light for God and
man. It is a challenge to share the
burden of the world's cross that the
ci ss of Christ may supplant the
w .ild's yoke of ignorance, supersti-
t;< n and autocracy.
T.. m it is a challenge to take up
ai in - under the Stars and Stripes; tp
(tin! it is a challenge to forego at
h -tiK that the nation tnay go forward
f"i tlu world abroad. To some it is a
challenge to give possesions and pride
and power that humanity may live; to
others it is a challenge to go into the
dark place of the world that the same
ideals for which men are dying in
France may he established and main-
tained hy the power of living, where
ignorance is the autocrat..
To all id' us Christ's Call is a chal-
lenge to more Christ-like living, to
more Christ-like giving, to more
Christ-like loving. The year 1918 holds
a cross for everyone. Yours may be
of different material than mine. But
both must be borne, that through all
this burden ^bearing and life-sharing
the cross of the Christ may rise victori-
ous and supreme in the heart and life
of the world. A. C. S.
