The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Lines.
Location and Operation. The main line of the M-K-T enters the
urban area from the northeast, proceeds southwestwardly along the
boundary of Highland Park and then along a line parallel to Turtle
Creek. It passes through the Union Terminal and along a line roughly
parallel to the Trinity River to a point a short distance southeast of
Forest Avenue where it crosses the river and leaves the urban area to
the southeast,
The M-K-T also operates another line northward from Dallas to
Denton known as the Denton Branch.
The freight terminal yard is the "Dallas Yard" located at the north
end of Lamar Street. This yard contains engine terminals, a car repair
shed, and a machine shop.
The freight house is located between Houston Street and Jefferson
Street on Pacific Avenue. The inbound house is 50 feet by 600 feet
with a two-story office building 50 feet by 100 feet0 The outbound
freight house is 30 feet by 555 feet. There are four house tracks with
a capacity of 68 cars, a number of team tracks and an automobile loading
platform.
The M-K-T maintains a small suburban passenger station on its main
line in Highland Park.
The M-K-T operates four passenger trains daily each way to the north.
Slightly more than an average of three trains each way per day are operated
to the south. Slightly more than an average of three freight trains
are operated each way daily to the north and a little less than an average
of two freight trains are operated each way daily to the south One freight
train each way daily is operated over the Denton Branch
Interchanges with other lines are located as follows: T. & P. - Houston
Street Interchange at Pacific Avenue and Houston street. L. & A. and Santa
Fe - Wall Street Interchange. Southern Pacific - crossing at Mockingbird
Lane, Cotton Belt, Southern Pacific; Ft. W. & D. C. Rock Island - South
Dallas Interchange in vicinity of Montgomery and Austin Streets.
Industrial Areas0 There are 44 industries located on the Denton
Branch and 91 on the main line of the M-K-T. Since the main line is
elevated in North Dallas, and since all of the street crossings except four
are separated, the great majority of the industries served by the M-K-T are
located in the industrial district north of McKinney and west of Alamo Street
and along the line in South Dallas. The M-K-T has two industrial districts
that are being developed on the Denton Branch0 One, owned by the railroad,
is bounded by Hines Boulevard, Knight's Branch, Maple Avenue, and Butler
Street. The other, separately owned, is bounded by Denton Drive, Mockingbird
Lane, Lemmon Avenue, and Inwood Road0
Grade Separations. There are four grade crossings and eleven grade
separations on the main line to the north. This line was raised and the
underpasses built in 1921. There are nineteen grade crossings and only
one separation on the Denton Branch in the urban area. Inasmuch as the
rail traffic over this branch is small, this has not proven to be a matter
of serious concern. There are five grade crossings and one separation in
the urban area along the main line to the south0
