personal information.
“We are doing every-
thing we can to stop this
but we’re not having a lot
of success at the moment,”
said Judy Oliver, Sr Vice
President of Community
Bank of Longview. “We
would never send a text to
our customers about ac-
count information. To con-
tact our customers, we ei-
ther call them by phone, or
send them mail.”
Customers of Communi-
ty Bank of Longview can
call the main number, 903-
236-4422, and speak to any-
one with customer service
if they have concerns. Do
not call the number pro-
vided in the text message,
call the real bank number
provided online or in the
phone book.
Authorities caution ev-
eryone to be careful when
releasing personal infor-
mation that can be used for
identity theft. There are
two forms of Identity
Theft: Basic identity theft -
when someone steals your
ID to obtain new credit ac-
counts and Credit hijack-
ing - when someone uses
your existing credit ac-
counts for personal gain.
If you receive a text from
your bank, credit card
company or government
agency and it looks legiti-
mate then close the e-mail
and contact the business
or organization directly.
Use a phone number that
you know to be official and
not the one provided in the
solicitous text. Never give
out private information
over the phone unless you
initiated the call and are
certain you have called the
correct business number,
and be especially reluctant
to give your personal infor-
mation when a unknown
business or individual
asks for your social securi-
ty number, mother’s maid-
en name and date of
birth.
Scams happen every day,
but the number of scams
increase during the holi-
day season. Protect your-
self and do not become a
victim of a scam.
