a Tcmaikable iact that the Sumcians have

Too varieties ol the annual plant cultiva-
ted for commercial purposes are reiy fe.
Not more than four or five have been tried
in the Uoited States of which only two or
th: continue to he raised. For convenience
they are better distinguished by tbeir seed
than by the quality of the Cotton Wool they
produce:
1. Green Seed This variety wss the
'first introduced into the country. It was
b-ooght from the Bahama Islands to South
Carolina where the firrt experiment was
made in growing h. From Carolina its col-
li vaitcn extended to the Uplands of Georgia
Before the invention of the cotton gin the
seed was sometimes separated from the cotton
by means of a bow nat unlike that used by
batters aad hence the terms '-Georgia up-
lands" and "Georgia bowed" or "Bowed
Cotton."
The second variety tiled was the brown
seed or Bourbon which produced Cotton of
longer and fioer fibres and was said to have
come fium the Island of Bourbon.
The iblrd description was Sea Island wi:b
small black ttd and long fine staple. The
cubiration of ibis variety h bow almost ex-
clusively confined to the roast and islands
bordering the Atlantic in South Carolina
and Georgia and came h ia said fiom :hr
Bahamcs.
The fuupb was the 4Mexicantvibe last vs.
rirty introduced and which has snprisedcd
ail ethers except ihe Sea Llaad. It is said tu
bare been iotioducfd from Mexico or Sooth
America.
The fifth the Sural though cbieft y'eolti-
vated is India forms another variety.
The Mexican has been found the most cer-
rain io yielding a crop. It is bard and less
liable to injury from unseasonable weather
and attsckt from msects if we except the
ravages of the army worm. Its yield per
acre in tirorsb'.e so:U has Droved greater
than any other tml. ftsqijldy has btsen
improved b? selecting the most perfect seed"
frou year to year for planting. The fibres
ot the Mexican cotton are of good color.strong
and of good length.
Ou good soil in Lousiana and Mississippi
the yield ia a favorable year will amount to
from SOO to 900 ios. of clean Cotton psr acre;
or from oae to twa bates the acre of 400 lbs-
each. Cotton is much influenced io its quality by
soil and climate. Thas in Egypt a varle -y
of the green seed has been changed from
the short staple of Georgia Uplands into a
fine long siiky stank next in value to good
Sea Island. The hill coo our of Genre ia
and the Carolines affrds a soil based upon
primitive rocks and hence fails in producing
as good Cotton aa the rich deposit soils in
Alabama Miestseippi and Louisiana known
in Liverpool classification as ''Mobile and.
New Orleans."
If Egyptian Cotton Seed be planted in the
United Stater the quality of the Cotton wilt j
degenerate ; and if the seed be earned from
the United States to Egypt inequality will
improve.
Until 1326 Sooth Carolina was the larg-
est cotton growing Slate. Subsequently
Georgia took the ieod till 1S-10 when Mis-
sissippi became the largest cotton crowing
Stau in the Union producing no less than
193000000 of pounds. Georgia stood next '
