Trojanettes came to the edge in Austin-
-and brought home the gold!
The Windthorst Trojanettes had been
ranked first in the state throughout
this volleyball season. They walked
out of the Burger Center Saturday still
ranked number one and they even had
a nice trophy to prove it. In a match
that lasted 1 hour and 35 minutes, the
Trojanettes defeated Wink 15-12,13-
15, 15-10. Junior Kelly Horn had 21
kills and 6 blocks and sophomore
Heather Schreiber had 16 kills and 8
blocks to lead their team to consecu-
tive State Championships. Horn and
Schreiber also repeated their honors
from last year, Horn was named to the
All Tournament Team and Schreiber
the Spalding Most Valuable Player
recipient.
In game 1, WHS jumped to a 5-1
lead on a Schreiber kill, an ace from
Shelbie Schenk and several Wink er-
rors and Horn came through with 2
consecutive kills. AT 11-4, it ap-
peared the Trojanettes were in control
when a tenacious Wink defense along
with several Windthorst passing and
hitting errors allowed Wink to narrow
the margin to 11-10. A few serves
later the Trojanettes claimed the win
15-12 with 2 kills and an ace from
Horn and a kill by Schreiber.
The Windthorst Trojanettes have achieved their dream-for the
than 3 points during the evenly
matched game. Windthorst took a 2-
0 lead on a long hit by Wink All-
Tournament selection Jess Ann
Fernandes and a service ace by Jana
Vieth. Fernandes got to kills to even
the score before junior Shelbie Schenk
served 1 of her 6 aces. Windthorst
held the lead until 23 serves later
when Wink went ahead 6-5. When
Wink extended their lead to 8-5, cous-
ins Vieth and Horn's 4 kills evened the
score at 8-8. The score was later tied
13-13 and Wink finished it off on
Windthorst passing and hitting errors.
Wink won the serve in Game 3 as
they had done in Game 1. The score
stayed close until again the Trojanettes
seemed en route to a victory leading
12-6. Early in the game, Heather
Schreiber and cousin Amber Schreiber
had kills to earn Windthorst side outs.
Horn had 2 kills and an ace, and along
with Heather Schreiber had key block
assists to slow down Fernandes.
Windthorst seemed ready to take the
earned the 5th State Title since 1992

Kelly Horn led the team in kills with
21. She also had 2 saves, 3 aces, 2 set
assists, 6 blocks and 3 digs landing her
on the All Tournament team. Heather
Schreiber had 2 saves, 1 ace, 18 set
assists, 16 kills, 15 blocks and 3 digs,
earning here the MVP award. Senior

claimed Amber. "I really wanted my
senior season to end in Austin." Jana

she also had 5 saves, 1 ace, 6 kills, and
7 digs. Shelbie Schenk served up 6
aces including the final nail in Wink's
coffin. She recorded 1 save, 1 kill and
7 digs in the match. Jordanna Syrus
put 2 aces across the net along with 2

The Archer City "Giving Tree" (for-
merly the Angel Tree) will be held
again this year beginning Friday, No-
vember 27. The tree will be located at
the Dairy Queen in Archer City. In
1997, over 75 donors provided gifts to
40 children. In addition to private
individuals, benefactors included civic
organizations, charitable groups,
churches, Camp Fire groups, Boy
Scout troops, and school classes. The
number of children to be placed on the
tree this year is expected to be slightly
higher than last year, so please make
this program a part of your holiday
activities.
They are so deserving of it. Their
unselfishness and compassion have
contributed to their success. I will
forever be grateful to them for all
they’ve done for me this season. The
girls and coaches are also grateful for
the support we have received from
parents and friends."

with Kelly Horn, were returnees from

Finnell calls opponent and concedes election
After an election recount which nar-
rowed the margin between incum-
bent State Representative Charles
Finnell (D-Holliday) and Rick
Hardcastle (R-Vernon) from 350
votes to only 257 (of 29,451), Finnell
has formally called his opponent and
conceded.
Finnell called Hardcastle late Tues-
day and wished him well in taking
over the reigns to represent the 13
counties in the Texas House, 68th
District. The final vote tally had
Hardcastle 14,854 votes to Finnell's
14,597.
Finnell attributed his defeat to be-
ing out spent 3 to 1 and being attacked

"I have called my opponent and con-
gratulated him.", he added. "I also
cautioned him against using the Wash-

paign in the Texas House of Repre-

"Our Community deserves a voice
in Austin who can work with Repub-

"You must never forget to put the

Finnell said he and his staff will
offer to assist Hardcastle in the transi-

people, not the office holders."
