WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENCE.

January 1st. 1819 j
Mr. Editor.
One month of this session of Congress has
already passed away and but two months!
vet remain. Great excitement has been pro-1
duced by the agitation of the Slavery qncs-
tion in Congress and indeed the conduct of
the Abolitionists has been so insolent to the
South as to have iuduccd a large meeting in
the Senate Chamber of the southern mem-
bers belonging to both panic. At ihis meet-
ing a committee of one from each southern
State was appointed to report to the same

every confidence in the wisdom and prudence

their course will be unanimously sanctioned
by the whole southern Delegation and that
it will meet with a cordial response from the
people of the south.

Columbia to report a bill to abolish the slave
trade in the District of Columbia. This re-
solution of Mr. Gott's was preceded by a
most insulting preamble. Immediately on
the adoption of this resolution a motion was
made by Mr. Stewart of Michigan to rrcoit-
aider the vote upon its adoption. An attempt
was inr-dc some days after .yards to lay this
motion to reconsider on the table but it fail-

Ucprcscntativcs and it will not be voted up-
on earlier than a week from this date: whe-
ther it will be finally adopted or materially
altered before its adoption lime alone will
reveal. Of one thing the South may rest
secure. No abolition of slavery in the Dis-
trict of Columbia nor incorporation of the
Wiltnot Proviso into any Hill organizing a
territorial Government in California or New
Mcico will ever meet the sanction of that
able and accomplished statesman James K.
Tolk. It mav be well to remark that when
Mr. Gott's resolution was passed at first
there was some sixty or seventy members of
the House absent owing to the approach of
the holidays previous to which no business
ofany importance is ever transacted owing to
the necessity of members attending to the nn -
rale business of their constituents and other
causes.
To-day (New Year's day") no business
lias been done in cither house it is in re-
nlify a holyday. The President's house is
thrown open and the whole world congre-
gate there all the foreign Ministers.Forr-ign-crs
and Citizens rush there to sec and to be
seen. I took my wife there but the crowd
was so great that wc were more anxious to
net away than to no there. Wc then isitcd

tinction amongst whom must not he forgot-

On coming out of Mrs. Madison's house
ve met Major. W. R. Scurry who bore the
electoral vote of our State the Banner State
of Democracy to this city and who although
lie only arrived here last night had already
an elegant lady hanging on his arm.
An immense number of claims for Boun-
ty &c. has been forwarded to me and is dai-
ly arriwng all of which I immediately file
in the proper offices but the Bureaus arc
nil so crowded with business (which has to
be transacted in its turn") that I fear Con-
gress will have adjourned before any of it is
attendrd to. The claims will however be
transmitted to me by mail after adjournment
when they will be promptly forwarded to their
owners. The uluile Texas Delegation arc
itaying at Brown's Hotel.

Ohio Lf.insi.tTinr. A serious disturb-
ance exists in the Ohio Legislature roctntly
convened atCoIumbus. Two separate Houses
of Representatives arc organized one whig
consisting of thirty members; the other
Democratic composed of forty members.
The Democrats have possession of the legis-
lative hall.
This difficulty has arisen on account of two
pets of Representatives of different politics
having claimed their scats as members from
Hamilton county
The Senate lias been properly organized
and is ready for business.
Messrs. Mf.rriam of Springfield Mass..

The Simtsov benefit at the Park Theatre
New York amounted to the clear sum of
$1000 which with $300 handed to hc com-
mittee by Mr. Macready as the receipts of
one night ol tns biiakspcrian readings makes
the handscme sum of four thousand three
hundred dollars. This with some benefits
soon to be given will place Mr. Simpson's
family beyond the reach of want.
At Dcbi.iv twenty-sk thousand dollars
were paid in four nights at the theatre by a
gentry who did not contribute one farthing to
the passengers of the Ocean Monarch three-
fourths of whom were their countrymen.

the womb) and for all other uterine and urinary
diseases. This medicine is the only one extant
in any country which tan cure Prolapsus Uteri. It
gives almost immediate relief in even the most hope-

great amount nf evidence lo this effect is on file the
particulars of which will be furnished gratuitousH

Person- suffering from this complaint should rot
lose a moment in sending for the particulars.
2. JLibliy's File Ointment.
This medicine is xcarrankd to cure even those
cases where a surgical operation is pronounced the
only hope. Its efficacy is most wonderful attested

one w ho may request them. I he instructions to
