Jeff and Cathy Colvin have plenty of reasons to be
proud of their daughter, Cassi. After securing a con-
tract with the prestigious Kim Dawson modeling
agency at age 12, the now 27-year-old began a career
that would see her face appear in advertisements and
fashion magazine editorials the world over.
“She’s probably been in every major magazine you
can mention. I’ve got a whole rack of them at home,”
Jeff said.
Now, Cassi will be appearing on national television
as one of eight new houseguests on CBS’ hit reality
series, “Big Brother,” starting July 7.
“So far, everybody’s just beside themselves,” Jeff
said. “It’s a big show. A lot of these reality shows kind
of come and go, and this is season 13 on the No. 1 net-
work, CBS, so it’s a pretty big deal.”

ACO seeks
assistance

Allen Community Outreach (ACO)
is reaching out for a little help this
month.
The local nonprofit has held its
“Christmas in July” fundraising cam-
paign annually for the past 17 years.
But this year, Executive Director
Glenda May said, the need has been
amplified by major reductions in out-
side funding.
“The United Way funding makes up
about 15 to 70 percent of our budget,
and we also in tandem with that have
not heard from FEMA [Federal Emer-
gency Management Agency], the fed-
eral emergency money we usually
have,” May said. “We’re looking at
$47,000 [reduced] right there in direct
services.”
To help spread the word, the organ-
ization is trying a few new strategies.
Five Allen area restaurants are donat-
ing portions of customers’ checks to
ACO on certain days if asked at the
time of service. In addition, the Market
Street grocery store at Watters Creek is
asking customers for donations at the
register. ACO will also have a donations
table set up at the Freebirds World
Burrito on 190 E. Stacy Road on July
13, 20 and 27.
“It’s been a higher profile this year
than in past years with these added
functions,” May said. “The restaurants
just really bought into it and said they

The Edge @ Allen Station Park was
closed most of the day June 29 after an
“offensive” piece of graffiti was discov-
ered on park grounds.
The piece, which was drawn in wax
on one of the park’s concrete skating
bowls, was “offensive in nature” but “rel-
atively small,” said Lori Smeby, assis-
tant director of parks and recreation.
The decision to close was made because
the image was visible enough to be seen
by families visiting the skate park while
crews worked to clean it off the concrete.
“We’ve certainly had bigger issues at
the park before,” Smeby said. “Staff took
the action that was needed at the time.
We would have hated for families to
come out and see something that would
be offensive to them.”

The Edge @ Allen Station Park reopened on June 30 after unknown vandals defaced one
area of the skate park with graffiti and forced its closure the previous afternoon.
