Relay For Life brings American Cancer Society programs to residents
It brings men, women
and children together for
an overnight gathering
of celebration and re-
membrance. It raises
funds for the fight against
cancer; a disease that
will affect one in two
American men and one
in three American
women in their lifetime,
accounting for more than
1.6 million cases this year
(112,230 cases in Texas
alone). It celebrates life,
remembers those lost and
empowers others to fight
back.
What is it?
It’s the American Can-
cer Society Relay For
Life, and it’s happening in
Van Zandt County.
The American Cancer
Society Relay For Life is
one important way to
make a difference in the
fight against all cancer.
This year, nearly three mil-
lion Relay participants in
4,200 local communities
across the country will
raise millions of dollars to
fuel the American Cancer
Society’s mission of elimi-
nating cancer helping
people get well, helping
people stay well, by find-
ing cures, and by fighting
back. So what happens
when you support Ameri-
can Cancer Society Relay
For Life? Here are just a
few examples:
• Helping you stay
well. Finding cancer early
can mean the difference
between life and death.
The Society helps you
take steps to prevent can-
cer or detect it at its earli-
est and provide the most
up-to-date information
about how to reduce your
cancer risk by healthy
lifestyle choices. Contact
1-800-227-2345 or
cancer.org for more infor-
mation.
• Helping you get well.
Having cancer is hard.
Finding help shouldn’t
be. The Society is in your
comer, around the clock to
guide you through your
cancer experience. The
Society can help patients
and their families make in-
formed decisions about
care, find moral support
from others who have
been there and offer prac-
tical solutions to daily
challenges.
• Finding cures. The
Society funds and con-
ducts groundbreaking re-
search that helps scientists
understand cancer’s
causes, determine how
best to prevent it, and dis-
cover new ways to cure it.

American Relay For Life flyers were passed out at a program designed to
create awareness about how to raise funds.
The Society is the largest
private funder of cancer
research.
• Fighting Back. Can-
cer is not just a health is-
sue, but a political issue.
The Society advocates for
people to have access to
critical cancer screenings
and follow-up treatment -
regardless of income.
Some examples include:
increasing government
funding for cancer re-
search, establishing
smoke-free policies, and
improving access to af-
fordable, quality
healthcare.
Last year, nearly one
million people got help by
phone via the Society’s
800-ACS-2345 number,
and through the American
Cancer Society’s Web site.
At the November Team
Captains meeting, Van
Zandt County Event Chair
Vicki Goodson and Co-
Chair Robin
Westmoreland, reviewed
the goals and objectives for
the 2013-14 year. “Our
fundraising goal for this
year is $ 102,000. We plan
to achieve that goal by re-
taining existing teams and
recmiting new teams, with
a goal of 40 total teams.
Every person in Van Zandt
County has been touched
in some way by cancer -
our main objective is to
give every person an op-
portunity to fight back,”
said Goodson.
On Dec. 10, the Relay
For Life of Van Zandt
County Planning Commit-
tee and Team Captains
will meet at the Canton
Intermediate School to fur-
ther plan for the 2014
event. In addition to the
educational material for the
Team Captains, there will
be a Christmas ornament
exchange. Anyone inter-
ested in forming or being
on a Relay For Life team
is encouraged to attend
this meeting.
The next American
Cancer Society Relay
For Life of Van Zandt
County will take place
May 9, 2014, at The Ar-
bors at First Monday
Trade Days. For more
information, call 1-800-
